ROWE TO TOP ALBERT HALL BILL

GIZZI GOES IN WITH DANTE CANE

SWIFT TOO SMART FOR STERLING

TOUGH GUY CRUZ NEXT FOR BUCHANAN

FRENCH-BORN Johnny Famechon (8-13-6), the 23-year-old Australian who, according to the
bookmakers and critics, did not stand the ghost of a chance, became the new featherweight
champion of the world when he outpointed Spanish-based Cuban exile Jose Legra (8-12^)
after 15 exciting rounds. With bantam Lionel Rose, Australia now have two World titles.

THE world record for non stop boxing, held by Andy
Bowen and Jack Burke, who fought for 7 hours 19
minutes in 146 rounds, of fighting in New Orleans, on
April 6, 1893, has been broken!
At the London Hotel, Teignmouth, Fred Tooley, the
28-year-old heavyweight, who throughout a long and
colourful career, has fought up through the weights,
smashed the old record by 41 minutes, and lost nearly a
stone in weight.
Most of his lined up 28 sparring partners withdrew
when the ABA suggested that the attempt might bring
the game into disrepute, but Tooley was too far
advanced in his organisation to withdraw, even if inclined
to do so, so the endurance test by the veteran, was
shared by two principal boxers, his younger brother
Graham, and Harold Clatsworthy, the former Western
Counties ABA flyweight champion.
