THE British Boxing Board of
Control has issued the
following statement to " Boxing
News."
" Since the decision of the
Board on May 10, 1967, which
set out the Board's views on the
Heavyweight Championship of
the World, the situation has
been reviewed in the light of
MUHAMMAD ALI'S having
been unable to defend his title.
" The Board have come to the
conclusion that in these circumstances,
it is in the interests of
the sport to arrive at a worldwide
agreement to clarify the
position.
" They have therefore accepted
the proposal of the other members
of the World Boxing Council
that JOE FRAZIER should
meet a suitable contender, the
winner to be recognised as
World champion.
" In the event of the contender
named no{ being JIMMY
ELLIS, then the Board have
asked the World Boxing Council
to insist that the winner must
meet Ellis in the first defence
of his title."
" Boxing News " has stood by
Ali and continued to recognise
him as World champion when
the World Boxing Association
and the New York State Athletic
Commission stripped him of the
title for refusing to be inducted
into the US Armed Services two
years ago.
But in view of the time that
has elapsed, the new stand taken
by the British Board and the
need to find an active champion,
" Boxing News " gives full support
to this move.
