NINE-PAGE BIG FIGHT SPECIAL
Ruddock can tell us the truth about Lewis

One punch sends Tony Collins back to the drawing board

Late sub Seamus stays the course

Van Horn rolls on

Thobela ready for British debut

Meyers bosses fading Bramble

A SENSATIONAL 10th round turnaround saw Derek
Angol join the long list of British failures in Europe
as durable Frenchman Akim Tafer retained his
European cruiserweight title.
The decision of German referee Kurt Stroer to
wave the fight off after two minutes 46 seconds of
the round has since brought waves of protest from
the Angol camp and the EBU have ordered an immediate
rematch.

DUBLINER Stephen Collins must be coming round to the view that
the so-called 'Luck of the Irish' is nothing more than a total myth after
dropping a majority decision when trying to separate seemingly
ageless wonder Sumbu Kalambay from the European middleweight
title in this Italian town on the shores of Lake Maggiore.

BEHIND on two cards while one judge had it even,
underdog Tony Lopez unleashed a furious barrage,
before a brutal right hand sent Joey Gamache crashing
flat onto his back at 0:40 of the 11th round to win
the WBA (world) lightweight title.

AN exciting welterweight title clash that would otherwise
have been a fascinating top of the bill, is relegated
to chief support on the Lewis-Ruddock promotion.
Multi-talented WBA champion Meldrick Taylor,
coming off a soul-destroying fourth-round defeat to
Terry Norris in May, puts his title on the line against
No. 1 contender Crisanto Espana, a hard -hitting
Venezuelan based in Barney Eastwood's Belfast
gym.

A FIRED-UP Ricky Meyers, blood streaming from a
nasty gash over his right eye, scored the biggest victory
of his career, winning a unanimous 10-round
decision over former WBA lightweight champion
Livingstone Bramble at the Taj Mahal.

ENGLAND, Ireland and Wales made a great impact in the first
Under-16 European championships when they captured no fewer
than five of the 11 gold medals on offer.
Highlight for the home countries was the punching power of
Welsh junior welterweight champion Gary Lockett (Pontypool
and Panteg), who was the main talking point after he demolished
all three opponents inside the distance.
The Pontypool youngster was the only boxer to force inside the
distance wins on all three opponents, devastating body punching
being the hallmark of his success.
