WHARTON ROARS TO QUICK VICTORY

Wright's gallant bid fails

McKinney goes marching on

ANGOL NAMED FOR EURO TITLE

Castro ordered to defend against Wharton

AMERICAN Kenny Schaefer became another vital
statistic on the impressive boxing record of Commonwealth
super-middleweight champion Henry Wharton,
when they met in the main event on this National
Promotions bill at the Barbican Centre.

FOR challenger Robert Wright, bravery and determination
just weren't enough. The Dudley welter put up
a remarkable display against Commonwealth champion
Donovan Boucher, but was finally ground down and
halted in the 11th of a scheduled 12-rounder at
Grosvenor House.

IT WAS the late Cus D'Amato, legendary trainer of Mike Tyson and
Floyd Patterson, who said that boxing was a battle of wills rather than
skill. Only when both men show equal will, D'Amato said, does a fight
boil down to skill.
That belief was undeniably true in the case of Iran "The Blade"
Barkley who, after retiring nearly two years ago following a one-round
hammering by Britain's Nigel Benn, staged one of the most uncompromising
world championship bids in recent history to register a
second victory over Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns and win the WBA
light-heavyweight title.

I ASKED for information about what happened to Harry "Kid" Silver but with little
response. However, former flyweight contender Dickie O'SuIlivan told me that when
he was in Australia he was walking along Queen Street, Brisbane, in the early 50s,
when h e came face to face with Harry. They had a brief chat, but Harry didn't say how
he came to be there, so maybe he emigrated to Oz. Does anyone know?
A REMINDER that Croydon's meeting on March 29 will be held at the Royal British
Legion Hall, London Road, Norbury, opposite the fire station. Gilbert Allnutt reports
the death of Dolly Hart, and writes: "Dolly loved her ex-boxer friends, and we loved
her. Our EBA relies on the help of our lady supporters, and Dolly was our star. May
she rest in peace."

DAVE ABBOTT'S distinguished amateur career might have come to an
end after the referee intervened in the third round when he ran out of
steam against Devonport rival Neil Hosking in the final (heavyweight)
bout of the evening at RAF Halton as the Combined Services took on
their Western Counties counterparts in the ABA quarter-finals.
