ABA SEMI-FINALS DAY TWO
EUROPEAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS INQUEST
IT'S the turn of Bethnal Green's former British champion Francis
Ampofo to try and win the European flyweight title when he
challenges Italian Salvatore Fanni on Thursday (April 30) in
Sardinia.
Already Brits Joe Kelly, Danny Porter and James Drummond have
tried but failed - Drummond seemingly robbed and Porter, earlier
this year, denied by a draw - and Ampofo will start a heavy underdog.
With the defeat of British light-middleweight champion Wally Swift
last weekend in a European title challenge in France, the demoralising
list of title failures on the continent continues to grow.

DERBY heavyweight Paddy Reilly (16st 7lbs) moved
on to the edge of the British title picture when he
stopped Central Area champion Michael Murray (16st)
in the eighth round at the Leisure Centre.
The British Board of Control had refused permission
for this to be billed as an eliminator because of Reilly's
inexperience, yet in only his fifth pro outing the
26-year-old former ABA finalist looked a mature fighter.

MOST High Schoolers might be thinking about the
Senior Prom but 17-year-old Clarence "Bones"
Adams is dreaming about a world championship after
thoroughly outboxing game Javier "Suzuki" Diaz, San
Antonio, Texas, over 12 rounds to win the vacant,
so-called WBC Continental American bantamweight
championship.

FEBRUARY 3, 1990, was the night it all fell apart for South
London's enigmatic heavyweight Derek Williams. In
France defending his European title for the first time
against the extremely limited gypsy challenger Jean-
Maurice Chanet, Williams was expected to make light work
of it before moving ahead to bigger, more lucrative things
in the shape of Gary Mason.

IN THE first of the Great Britain ABA semi-finals at the
Gateshead Leisure Centre England romped home against
Scotland by a winning 10-2 margin to demonstrate still
further the ever-widening gap between the two countries.
There were mysterious split decisions for Marlon Ward,
Darren McCarrick and Michael Hopper with all
looking clear winners, but the shock of the night was
provided by unknown Scot John Connelly who knocked
out Eric Noi in the third round.
