Stone scrapes home in thriller
A SOLID, sometimes ruthless display from
Frank Bruno, as he ground down courageous
South African Pierre Coetzer in eight
rounds at Wembley Arena, raised him to the
level of genuine contender for the world
championship.

WELSH southpaw Neil Haddock added his chapter
to the astonishing British super-featherweight title
story when he disposed of an alarming and unexpectedly
fragile Michael Armstrong in six rounds at
Bury Leisure Centre.

IT'S GETTING to be a familiar story now, but it's no less disturbing
for all that: Gary Jacobs was denied his just reward when he was
declared a majority 12-rounds points loser against Frenchman
LudOvic Proto for the vacant European welterweight title at the
Stade Pierre de Coubertin.
That this was just the latest in a long line of bad decisions in
major fights this season only serves to compound the sense of
injustice, not diminish it.

I AM WRITING with regard to the Champs Camp
gym at Manchesterand the outstanding achievements
of manager Phil Martin and every fighter at the gym.
I say every fighter as it is a place which, when you are a
part of it, means more than being a member of a boxing club
etc. It is the pride of being a Champs Camp fighter, the
same pride that recently saw Frank Grant and Maurice
Core win British titles against formidable opposition (in
Grant's case world-class).

ALAN TOWEEL, manager /trainer of Pierre Coetzer,
rang me the day before the latter's contest with
Frank Bruno, and said: "Whatever happens, Bruno
will know he has been in a fight." He was so right.
Rarely can anyone have given a gutsier performance
than Pierre. It was good to see a South African boxer
in this country, and I am wondering just how long it
will be before they are re-admitted to the Commonwealth.
