IT HAS been close to two and a half years since Madison
Square Garden's Felt Forum closed down for renovations.
During this time, boxing in New York City has
subsided substantially insofar as live shows are concerned.
The gyms are bristling with activity, but boxers
have had to fight elsewhere.
Last February's Sugar Ray Leonard-Terry Norris
match in MSG's main arena was seen as the start of
big-time boxing returning to New York. However, this
proved to be an aberration as only 5,000 fans attended
that show. That disastrous low turnout could be
attributed to the match being shown live on television,
combined with the recession.

MICHAEL IRVINE, the Member of Parliament for Ipswich, and Father
George Saintsbury, the 'Schools' ABA Chairman, were Guests of
Honour at the annual England v Wales Schoolboy International at the
Moat House Hotel. The Welsh Schools' ABA fielded a strong team
which included three current National Schoolboy Boxing Champions
and emerged victorious by the runaway margin of 10-4.
In 36 rounds of high-quality boxing no competitor suffered any
injury worse than a slight nose bleed and so even was the matching
that only one standing count was given. Boxing took place in the
sumptuous Banqueting Room of the Moat House Hotel before a
capacity crowd of 500 dinner-suited diners. Relatives and friends of
the competitors were admitted to the back of the room from there
they were able to observe the progress of the 13 exciting bouts.

IT'S END of year report time again for the Board of
Control, and once again the performances of imported
opponents show that despite John Morris's brave
assurance at the start of 1991 that "It's been my
campaign to vet more closely the credentials of
overseas fighters and the system is working", the
evidence of the past 12 months is that nothing much
has changed.
