Strength gives Rafffferty the edge

He ll be bigger than Sugar Ray

Hopkins can finish it

Lally upsets the script with majority decision

Christie's on the way back

LAURENT BOUDOUANI became European light-middleweight
champion with a dramatic third-round
knockout of fellow-Frenchman Jean-Claude Fontana
in this suburb of Dijon.
Boudouani has been heavily criticised in France for
failing t o fulfil t h e potential he showed in winning
the welterweight silver medal at t h e 1988 Olympics,
but this time he was fit and sharp.

IF a fighter said he could beat Riddick Bowe and
Lennox Lewis in the same week you would think he
was mentally unbalanced. In fact you would be
wrong because in the Pan American Games in 1987,
Cuban Jorge Luis Gonzalez did just that on his way
to the gold medal. Jorge took a 3-2 decision over
Bowe in the semi-finals and beat Lewis 4-1 in the
final. Bob Arum must be hoping history repeats
itself for his big Cuban - some hope.

LIGHTWEIGHT Graham Hughes and light-middle Colin Wallace successfully
defended their respective Western District championships
at t h e Hospitality Inn.
This year's tournament, which featured 28 c o n t e s t s spread over
two days, went up-market for t h e first time when £2700 sponsors
Sydney Street Boys Club decided to stage t h e annual event at t h e
popular pro venue.

WOLVERHAMPTON'S solid NIGEL RAFFERTY used
his strength to outmaul the more stylish GRAHAM
BURTON, Chesterfield ( l i s t 131bs) over eight-twos
at the Park Hall Hotel.
Rafferty was only one pound heavier at 12st, but
looked much the bigger man and Burton could
never match him for physical power.
