BY REFUSING to accept Eric Podolak as an opponent for Julio
Cesar Chavez the Nevada Commission struck a blow for sense and
highlighted the lack of guts in the WBC. The WBC had been busy
"adjusting" their ratings to raise this ordinary club fighter from
nowhere in February to No. 11 in May, without any justification. What
will they do with Podolak now that Don King no longer needs him?

DESPITE a high rating by the World Boxing Association and
the International Boxing Federation, Pierre Coetzer remains
the heavyweight nobody knows. And if Coetzer's manager
trainer Alan Toweel has his way, that is how it is going to stay.
Toweel has already let it be known that he and his fighter
do not want to be "pestered by the press" when they arrive
in Las Vegas for Coetzer's official heavyweight eliminator with
Riddick Bowe on July 18.
 
FORMER two-time heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson said watching
his adopted son Tracy Harris Patterson win the WBC super
bantamweight title with a two-round demolition of Thierry Jacob was
"The proudest moment of my life."
No doubt the evening ranked somewhat lower on Jacob's list. He

ANGEL lightweight DAMIEN McGEE is recovering
from serious injuries received in a hit-and-run
accident while running to the gym.
Club secretary John Jacobs said 20-year-old
McGee, who recently made a winning London
debut against a Swedish Select, was hit while on a
pedeistrian crossing.
