THE recent poll In the magazine concerning who our
readers viewed as the best of the various title holders
was very interesting, but threw up few real surprises.
Some of the percentages came out higher or
lower than expected
but generally the winners
in each division
were reasonably predicted.

TOMMY MORRISON makes the first defence of his WBO heavyweight title in
front of his hometown fans at the Kemper Arena, Kansas City on Monday
(August 30) when he meets muscled Texan Mike Williams.
Williams comes in after Anthony Wade was turned down and undefeated Peter
McNeeley rejected a small purse offer.

I ALWAYS thought my geography was pretty good
but I did not realise Vanuatu was part of the Commonwealth,
or that there was any boxing there, until
they put the name of Phil Kating forward at the
Commonwealth Council.
Phil did not make the list of contenders but judging
by his points win over Marty Sullivan of New
Zealand in Port Vila on June 11, he could yet make it
as a middleweight.

NEW ABA light-flyweight champion Mark Hughes will
spearhead Wales' team for the European senior championships
in Bursa, Turkey, next month (September 6-12).
Hughes is joined by Gwent Swansea clubmate Jason
Williams (light-welter) as well as former triple ABA superheavyweight
champion Kevin McCormack (Coed Eva and
Royal Navy).
Maesteg's ABA featherweight title holder Jason Cook
has been selected for the European Junior (under-19)
championships in Thessaloniki, Greece, at the end of next
month.
