Boxing News Magazine 1993  History

From dole queue to world-beater in 48 incredible hours

Haddock can break the jinx

Crook is right up against it

Hoko's hour of destiny

Ayers courage is not enough

FORMER British light-heavyweight champion Crawford Ashley
steps down in weight for an unexpected challenge for the WBA
super-middleweight crown against American southpaw Michael
Nunn at the Pyramid Arena in Memphis tonight (April 23).

ANOTHER chapter in the long-running British superfeatherweight
title jinx will unfold at the New Century
Hall, Manchester on Monday (April 26) when
Welshman Neil Haddock tries to become the first
title holder to retain his title, against local man
Steve Walker.

CONSISTENT crowd-pleaser Paul Hodkinson puts
his hard-won World Boxing Council featherweight
title on the line once more against the dangerous
Mexican Gregorio 'Goyo' Vargas at the National
Boxing Stadium in Dublin on Wednesday (April 28).
If he turns back Vargas, Hodkinson might justifiably
be placed among the best pound-for-pound
fighters in the world today. The Mexican mandatory
challenger comes with excellent credentials.
This is Hodkinson's fourth defence - and could be
his toughest yet.

UNBEATEN IBF super-middleweight champion James
"Lights Out" Toney floored rugged Ricky Thomas
with a double left hook and a right in the ninth, and
was working him over on the ropes with both hands
in the 10th, when veteran referee Frank Cappuccino
rescued the game clubfighter following a fast sevenpunch
flurry after 51 seconds of the final round in a
non-title 10-rounder at the Fernwood Resort.
