Boxing News 1972 Memorabilia
SUGAR RAY ROBINSON had it all. He was the true ring
artist, combining grace and skill with spectacular punching.
Robinson fired tremendous combinations and put
together strings of left hooks. His jab was like a machinegun.
LES McATEER, former British middleweight
champion, is fed up and ready to quit the ring,
says Birkenhead manager Johnny Campbell.
Campbell is an angry man these days. He claims
British promoters show little interest in booking
his fighters.
PEDRO CARRASCO of Spain and Mando Ramos of California meet for the
third time with the World Boxing Council lightweight title at stake when
they clash in Madrid on June 30.
DAVE DAVES and Trevor Francis battle it out in ABA final. Davies dropped
a majority verdict but looked a sure winner.
LEEDS welter Jeff Gale was the big hit of England's team
in the first stages of the European under-21 championships
here. Gale stormed to two exciting victories and qualifies
for at least a bronze medal.
JOHN CONTEH'S cut eye win over Billy Aird on Tuesday's
Albert Hall bill has caused a problem. The victory, as
manager George Francis pointed out afterwards, puts
Conteh among Britain's top heavyweights after only 10
fights (all wins).
ARCHIE MOORE dominated the world's lightheavy
division for a decade, and was a match
for most heavyweights.
Relive Old Archie's great fights in another
exciting feature by editor Graham Houston.
