Holyfield reaches the heights on night of the birdman

Another close call for Archer

Honeyghan and Cook far from impressive

Dreary Akinwande wins in a bore

Chavez and Camaeho at MGM in January

Pompey students ready to rumble

PROMOTER Tommy Gilmour's well-supported
charity show in aid of the Prince and Princess
of Wales Hospice Fund at the Forte Crest Hotel
produced only 14 minutes and 50 seconds of
action.

INITIALLY I was satisfied with the ITV decision not
to cover the Eamonn Loughran-Lorenzo Smith
fight. I felt it was about time some quality control
was introduced.
Now I am not too sure. In the days when the BBC
and Mickey Duff had things all their own way TV
took the bad and the good, but they were also interested
in the young fighters coming through and built
up interest in them before they reached the top.

FOR a long time regarded as the cruiserweight
division's uncrowned champion,
American Orlin Norris made it
official by crushing Argentina's
Marcelo Figueroa in six rounds to win
the vacant WBA championship at the
Winter Circus.

EXPATRIATE Cuban Jorge Luis Gonzalez,
who is seemingly intent on creating a "bad
boy" persona for himself, moved closer to a
shot at one or other version of the world
title with a lOth-round stoppage of the 37-
year old Renaldo Snipes in a sickeningly
one-sided encounter.

THEIR forthcoming international engagement
Against Wales which takes place in Ballina, Co Mayo,
on November 20 the Irish selectors have selected a
Htroiig squad, writes BENNY CARABINI. JIM PRIOR
makes his senior international debut at light-flyweight.

THE WEST Country's boxing fraternity
are mourning the death of Albert
(Bert) Warrell, who collapsed and
died whilst out shopping near his
Yate home on October 28. He was 81
years old.
Bert had been involved with boxing for
more than 70 years, having taken up the
sport as a schoolboy.

THE Lancaster Suite of Norwich Airport's Ambassador
Hotel was packed to capacity for Norwich
Broadside's first dinner tournament of the season.
Astute matchmaking resulted in some excellent bouts,
not least among them being the hotly-waged light-welter
encounter between up-and-coming JON FITZGERALD
(Broadside) and Luton Boya' Club's busy-fisted KEVIN
O'DONNELL
