MATCHMAKERS Frank Turner and Graham
Lockwood's best-laid plans were thrown into
disarray when a flu bug struck the Croy Miners'
Welfare Gym and with 24 hours remaining,
their main support bout and a six-rounder
were casualties of the virus.

IT slipped past almost unnoticed but one judge only had Chris Eubank two
points ahead of Lindell Holmes. If that official had scored just one of the
rounds he gave to Eubank to Holmes it would have made them even on his
card, and made it a majority decision which would have been ridiculous.
I have had correspondence before with the WBO about their judges, and
all I can say is that they still have a quality problem

UNSUNG Midlander Mark McCreath's bold
bid to win the European light-welterweight
title ended after 11 torrid rounds against
the more gifted and undefeated champion
Valery Kayumba at the Palais des Sports
Marcel Cerdan.

HARD-HITTING Rafael Ruelas (9st 91bs), Sylmar, California, solidified his position
as the WBC's No. 1 lightweight contender with an impressive third round
stoppage over badly outgunned Robert Rivera (9st 131bs), Tucson, Arizona.
Thanks to the NABF's Bobby Lee and the California State Athletic Commission,
this fight was somehow billed for the NABF lightweight championship - although
Rivera was admittedly four pounds overweight.
Rivera, a crafty , reluctant southpaw, claimed he had never hit the deck, but
Ruelas floored him easily in the third with a devastating right counter to the
head. Rivera grimly got to his feet, only to be pounded to his knees seconds later.
Rivera got up again, frantically clutched and pawed, trying to survive, but
Ruelas, a reed thin, herky-jerky Californian, finally broke loose and crashed two
more big rights to his head that sent him faltering back against the ropes.

THE HIGHLY entertaining and uncompromising lightweight battle between
Derek Saunders (Dawlish) and Watchet's Mark Kane proved to be the highlight
of the Western Counties finals at the the City Hall.
Neither budged an inch In a classic toe-to-toe encounter.Kane, a robust Glasgow-
born southpaw, edged the opener with cleaner straight lefts to the head as
they emerged from clinches, during which both launched penetrating body
shots.
