Murphy the warrior loves his job

McKillan's aiming high

Mark's experience pays dividends

Padilla pulls off another upset in great style

UNDERDOG Zack Padilla, who upset Roger
Mayweather to earn a crack at undefeated WBO
light-welterweight champion Carlos "Bolillo"
Gonzalez, fought the fight of his life to take a
stunning unanimous points decision over 12
exhausting rounds.

ONE-TIME Australian superstar Jeff Fenech
announced his retirement the day after he was
knocked out in the seventh round by former IBF
featherweight champion Calvin Grove (9st 71bs) in
front of a 10,000 crowd at the National Tennis Centre.
Fenech, trounced in his previous outing by WBC superfeatherweight
champ Azumah Nelson, was taken to hospital
afterwards for treatment to a cut mouth.

YOU could forgive Sean Murphy if he was bitter with boxing. The flame-haired
British featherweight champion has literally shed blood for the sport. He estimates
that some 40 stitches have closed the various wounds that mark his pugnacious
face.
He's fought his heart out in two British title "wars" against Gary de Roux and,
Just recently, against Alan McKay. Yet he's seen fellow professionals like Frank
Bruno, Lennox Lewis, Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn talking telephone numbers
when they consider their next ring outing while he - who's fought harder than all
of them - has precious little to show for all his efforts.
But Sean isn't bitter. Far from it. In fact, he's actually content with his lot.

IT SEEMS Impossible to stop the spread of titles at any level. The WBA may have
decided to disown the Penta Continental titles, buty you can be sure another one
will take its place. On a national level there Is now in existence a Canadian Boxing
Council trying to rival the recognised national organisation, the Canadian
Professional Boxing Federation.
On April 14, in Toronto, Marc Leduc won recogniation as the Canadian Boxing Council
light-welterweight champion with a unanimous decision over Andy Wong. Another modern
trend saw both fighters weigh inside the Imlt the night before the bout, but Leduc was
lOst 71bs at fight tme and Wong lOst 31bs. A heavyweight bout saw Tom Glesby outpoint
Mike Faulkner despite giving away 381bs while lightweight Billy Irwin decisioned Cliff
Hicks. Leduc won a silver medal for Canada In Barcelona and Glesby and Irwin were also
in the team.

THE CLASH between Western Counties Novice title
holder Dave Holder and Matthew Guppy, a schoolboy
quarter-finalist three years ago, provided the
highlight amongst the nine bouts at the final
Gloucester Sporting Club show of the season, held
at the Hatherly Manor Hotel on April 17, writes
PETER FOLEY.
