Boxing News 1972

A. QUARTER of a century ago, a young coloured boy came out of Canada
to punch out a name for himself on t h e big-time boxing scene.
That name was Arthur King. He came to this country to beat Billy Thompson at
Belle Vue f o r the British Empire lightweight championship in 1948, holding the t i t l e until
1951 w h e n he became an American citizen. In 1949 King was back at t h e Albert Haill
t o beat Tommy McGovern and he licked a stack of good fighters in t h e States.

WHAT a great little bantam is Alan Rudkin! Obviously
one of the best this country has produced in years.
Johnny Clark will never be cnamp as long as Rudkin is
boxing. Alan would always lick him, no matter how
many times they fought, because he has the psychological
advantage of having beaten him twice, although I agree
their fights would always be classics to watch.

EDDIE THOMAS will go down in history in British boxing, having achieved the unique distinction of steering
two British boxers to world titles, in Howard Winstone and Ken Buchanan. No other British manager has gained
that honour.
Eddie Thomas has now gone into partnership with Howard Winstone and they are now going after a stupendous
hat-trick—a third world champion for Great Britain.
Any amateur contemplating turning professional or any unattached boxer should contact Eddie Thomas. Every
boxer in their combined stable will be trained and managed by Eddie Thomas and Howard Winstone.

NEW West Country heavyweight hope Eddie Neilson, of Swindon, hit the
ABA title trail with a couple of storming wins in the Gloucestershire,
Somerset and Wiltshire championships at the Corn Exchange.

LOOKS LIKE House Full signs will again be hoisted at the
Cliffs Pavilion, Southend-on-Sea, next Thursday, when
Harry Scott of Bootle and Eric Blake of Leatherhead tangle
in a return contest for co-promoters Johnny Levine and
Jack Solomons.

ROGER ZAMI, of France, produced a display of speed and power to win
the vacant European junior welter title by outpointing Italy's Sandro
Lopopolo over 15 rounds.
