CHRIS PYATT maintained his push towards a shot at
one of the middleweight "world" titles with a onesided
12-round points win over strangely reluctant
Danny Garcia of Puerto Rico at the Granby Halls.
But Pyatt's credentials were not enhanced by a performance
that, for all his genuine efforts, lacked
sparkle.

ROBBIE REGAN'S first defence of the European flyweight
title tomorrow (February 6) should provide
some clues as to how far the gritty Welshman can go
on the international circuit.
His challenger, Danny Porter, comes into his sixth major
title challenge having taken WBO champion Pat Clinton to a
closely fought 12-round unanimous points defeat in Glasgow
last September. Just how Regan deals with his more
experienced opponent will tell us how capable Regan is at
top level.

WE'VE had three spectacularly bad verdicts in
British rings in recent months, all of them from Star
Class referees. Mickey Vann scored Welsh middleweight
Darron Griffiths a points winner over
Antonio Fernandez in a British title eliminator, a verdict
which even Griffiths and his manager Billy Aird
sportingly rejected. Then we had Roy Francis'
extraordinary ruling in favour of Paul Harvey over
Peter Harris, followed by Adrian Morgan's decision
last week that Tony McKenzie had outpointed
Michael Driscoll at Leicester.

AFTER narrowly defeating Billy Cowan in the semi-final, Eddie
Fisher of Holy Trinity was given a shameful 3-2 decision over
Immaculata's Stephen Gibson in the Ulster senior welterweight
final at the Ulster Hall.
The packed hall erupted into loud boos and thunderous
stamping of feet as Ulster Secretary Jim Noonan announced
the verdict and presented Fisher with the McGeough Cup.
