Boxing News Magazine 1993 History
WELSH star class referee Adrian Morgan retires this
month at the age of 65. He accepts the decision, but
wants to make it clear he does not go gently into his
good night.
"It's a Board ruling and if 1 said that it was unjust,
I'd be accused of sour grapes and I definitely don't
want that," he said.
"It doesn't happen in the States and you get people
like Arthur Mercante Snr who remains a very
good referee, well into his 70s.
AS big Clifton Mitchell sat at ringside watching Herbie
Hide take the vacant British heavyweight title in
Dagenham last February, he felt a natural resentment.
He gazed in mounting disdain as Hide floored
Manchester's Michael Murray four times and
stopped h im in five near-farcical rounds.
NAJIB DAHO was a pro's pro, a man who gave no
quarter nor asked any, through all of his 60 fights
and 14 years in the business.
His death, in a car crash in his native Morocco last
Saturday night, came at the tragically young age of
34.
It was a shock and a sadness to all who knew him
and those who saw h im fight.
Manager Jack Trickett, who is said to be absolutely
shattered, took with h im the condolences of
everyone In British boxing when he travelled to
Morocco for the funeral.
ROME will be the scene of a big Italian derby on October
6 when MAURO GALVANO takes on VINCENZO
NARDIELLO at the Sports Palace for the vacant European
super-middleweight title. The meeting of the two
Romans is given added spice by the fact that Nardiello's
father Raffaelle was Galvano's trainer for 13 years.
Both have held the crown before, while Galvano was
also WBC champion at the weight between December
1990 and October last year. Nardiello failed in his one
attempt at a "world" title, against Victor Cordoba in
December 1991.
WITH MAASTRICHT, ERM and the dreaded ecu occupying
much of the media's attention of late, it is just
a coincidence that much of the recent international
boxing scene has been located in Europe. In April
1992 the European under-19s were staged in Edinburgh,
three months later it was the Olympics in
Barcelona and then in May of this year the World
senior championships were held in Tampere. In
between, the only non-European locale was Montreal
who were hosts for the World under-19s In October
1992.
