LAING'S DREAM IS IN RUINS

Kostas battles on - to make a new life after boxing

NO SLOT FOR SUGAR

Fenech is looking good for Nelson

McGirt returns Petroza crashes

Norris intent on scoring knockout

THE end of a long and occasionally glorious career could
be near for Kirkland Laing following the loss of his British
welterweight title to Nottingham rival Delroy Bryan at the
Albert Hall.

SHOULD anyone out there need reassuring, Kostas
Petrou still smiles with the same ease that he always has,
he speaks coherently, he is still capable of sustained
logical conversation and he doesn't roll when he walks.
And you don't have to lean close and shout!
With a busy sandwich takeaway business and an equally
hectic south Birmingham home built around wife Helen,
four children and mongrel named Tank, Petrou is 21
months into the rest of his life.

GLEASON'S is the best known gym in New York City, but
there are other fine gyms as well. A relatively new gym that
has been opened for less than a year is the Kingsway
Boxing Center, located at 40th Street and Eighth Avenue in
Manhattan.

A LETTER from Billy Watt of Merseyside on which I invite readers'
opinions. He writes: "I boxed professionally from 1945 to 1950 and
am a regular reader of your page. You give the Ex-Boxers'
Associations excellent coverage, which prompted me to write to
you.
"The genuine ex-boxers in these EBAs are in the minority. Far too
many non-boxers are being allowed to join, and many are seving on
committees. In my opinion, this is wrong. EBAs must be kept
authentic, otherwise they will lose the respect and support of the
boxing-minded public."

THE capacity crowd will have left the Staffordshire ABA
championships at the Gala Baths understandably in the
belief that Stafford Town's Scott Murray had won the
county heavyweight title, when in fact, in extraordinary
and confusing circumstances, his unanimous decision
over Brandon Summers (Wednesbury) had not qualified
h im for the Midlands South Zones.
