JULY 23 was not a day that the sports world could be proud of. During
the Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago Cubs baseball game, two separate
ugly incidents occurred. Frustrated over not being able to throw a
batter out, Reds pitcher Rob Dibble deliberately struck the Cub batter
on the back with a ball. During the same game, Cub player Andre
Dawson bumped an umpire during an emotional fit.

THERE have been a number of notable fighting men endowed with the surname of
Johnson and the most famous of them was the one who came from Galveston in
Texas, who won the heavyweight championship of the world and whose first name
was Jack.
Not only was he the first black man to win the premier crown, but he holds a
special place in the record books as he participated in the first ever all-black world
heavyweight title bout, when his challenger was also a Johnson — Battling Jim to be
precise.
Just how did this come about? Jack had won the world crown from Tommy Burns
at Sydney in Australia on Boxing Day 1908. It was a victory that shook the fistic world,
especially in America where the idea of a black holder of the premier fistic title was
intolerable. The boxer himself did nothing to help matters. He had a most arrogant
manner and every effort was made to topple him from his throne.

IN September 1992 the Sandy and District ABC will be
celebrating their 25th anniversary and there would be
few to disagree with the view that it has been quite a
success story. Located in a small market town in rural
Bedfordshire, the Sandy Club have staged well-attended
dinner and open tournaments over the years. Their
boxers have met some of the top amateurs in the
country and in the 1970s Jimmy Harrington boxed for
England.
