SECONDS OUT — A CHANCE TO AIR YOUR VIEWS
LIKE most institutions of its kind, Philadelphia's Riverview
Nursing home is not tne most upbeat place to
spend a couple of hours. But on a recent Spring
evening, the joyous sounds of laughter and clapping
erupted from the lounge and echoed through the
corridors.
The source of the merriment was a small group of
people gathered around a television set. They were
watching a video tape sharing one resident's longforgotten
ring exploits, a dazzling trio of spectacular
knockouts that exploded across the screen like a
lightning bolt from the past.
Judging from the boisterous reaction, everyone was
suitably impressed. This was especially true of the
61-year-old ex-boxer who suddenly found himself the
centre of attention again after almost three decades of
neglect.

AT THE age of 22 and with only 26 bouts under his belt,
Crawley's Mick Alldis has been picked to box for
England at bantamweight after an excellent string of
wins in this year's ABA Championships (see page 25).
Mick was unfortunate to meet in the semis the very
strong Scottish champion David Hardie who was too
experienced for Mick, boxing the wrong bout until the
last round after Hardie had established a lead from a
big second.
