BOXING NEWS AMATEUR INTERNATIONAL SPECIAL
ONE of the greatest benefits of my work with the WBC was
the opportunity to visit Mexico and soak up the atmosphere
of the fight scene there.
At the 1988 convention in Mexico City the WBC arranged
a lunch at a restaurant and as entertainment you could
watch a cock fight or play at matador against some young
bulls. Not wishing to be bored or gored, I strolled through
the gardens and came across a couple of Mexican old age
pensioners sitting on a bench drinking Cerveza and sharing
a joke.

DIE-HARD amateur boxing supporters who turned up at
the national stadium to cheer on the home side were
rewarded with a remarkable win over England by the
narrow margin of six bouts to five.
The dramatic events in the ring unfolded in front of a
sparse crowd that had little to cheer before the interval.
England won the first three bouts and at one stage had
a commanding 4-1 lead

IN 1972 six boxers from the Repton Club in London made the Great
Britain squad for the Olympic Games in Munich. Jimmy Flint, John
Whitehorn and Joey Wreden did not make the final selection, but
Maurice Hope, Graham Moughton and Billy Taylor all made it onto
the team for Munich.
They joined Ralph Evans, Neville Cole, Billy Knight, Alan Minter,
Maurice O'Sullivan and George Turpin. Evans, Minter and Turpin
all won bronze medals.
