Next Tuesday London has its annual big open-air show when Jack
Solomons stages the impatiently anticipated contest between Don
Cockell and Randolph Turpin for the former's light-heavyweight title and
Lonsdale Belt, with the Empire crown as makeweight. This is indeed a clash
of champions and the first time since the redoubtable Jock McAvoy that
a middleweight titleholder has challenged for heavier honours. Cockell's
unconvincing display against Renato Tontini has caused him to slip somewhat
in the betting, but he is now training for the fight of his life, realising that
defeat may mean fistic oblivion, whereas victory will almost certainly gain
him a crack at the World's title. Turpin has an opportunity to win the highest
honours again, but whether he can stand up to Cockell's heavy punching to
the body remains to be seen. All tickets were sold over a week ago.
