BRITISH welterweight champion John H. Stracey gave
European champion Roger Menetrey food for thought as
he smashed Vernon Mason, from America, into a fourth
round knockout defeat in their scheduled 10 rounds main
event at the Royal Albert Hall.

BILLY WILLIAMS, West
Ham  scored his
14th win in 15 pro contests,
and avenged his sole
defeat, by outpointing
Johnny Wall, Shoreditch
 over eight hard
rounds.

A COUPLE of busy weeks out here. Two Commonwealth champions, an
Australian champion, and a former Australian champion on the comeback trail
all saw action in the period.
On March 22, Australian
welterweight champion
Rocky Mattioli showed
devastating form in
knocking out the New
Zealander Dennis Enright
in the third round a,
scheduled 10.
Should British welterweight
champion Johnny
Stracey fail to lift the
European title from Roger
Menetrey, a bout in Australia
to seek a challenger
for Commonwealth champion
Clyde Gray would be
a good money spinner. The
Mattioli-Enright bout tookplace
in Melbourne. Mattioli
would certainly give
Stracey trouble.

YOUNG ENGLAND international Jimmy Batten turned his back on the amateur ranks
at the weekend, joining the growing Terry Lawless stable.

Jimmy Batten
(West Ham) was seriously
considering quitting boxing
after his English ABA semifinal
defeat by Robbie Davies
at Hull earlier this month. But
Batten, 18, decided after a
week of pondering his future
that he would join the paid
ranks.

ABA LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT champion Billy Knight
walked into a door three days before the Belle Vue
semi-finals and loosened three teeth.
