THERE is an old sports saying — "Nice Guys finish
Last." Well if that was true it is very doubtful if Sandy
Saddler would have become world featherweight
champion.
DESPONDENT Sandy in hospital after car crash that ended his career.
Once inside the ring
Saddler was one of the most
vicious, dirty, no holds
barred fighters I have ever
seen, but outside you could
not find a quieter, more
mild-mannered gentleman
than the stringbean
featherweight from the
sidewalks of New York City,
who had his career cut
short in an auto accident
that robbed him of the sight
of one eye.
JIMMy McGRAIL was a Liverpool-reared welterweight
who shaped up like an American pro. He
looked the part, with his spiky crew-cut and brash
exterior.
KIRKLAND LAING has come a long way since a schoolteacher
decided that if he was going to keep fighting he
might as well join a boxing club.
The junior school teacher
took nine-year-old Kirkland
off to t h e local club and they
c h a n n e l l e d Kirkland's aggression
into a sport he has
been devoted to ever since.
