SUGAR RAY ROBINSON bounced down the aisle and into the ring. And,
as he jigged about in the corner, loosening his well-trained muscles in
readiness, he thought of the old saying: " They never come back."

AFTER watching Joe Bugner's recent fights with Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier
I must go along with Henry Cooper by saying Joe has got as far as he ever
will, and can consider himself extremely lucky to have earned the money he has
done.

MIDLANDS fight promoter Alex Griffiths was writing
this week to New Yorks's Gil Clancy asking what cash
terms can bring former world champion Emile Griffith to
fight Larry Paul in Britain this autumn.

WHEN Charles " Sonny " Liston died tragically at his Las Vegas home in
January 1971 he left A world which had never really wanted to see him
strut the American sidewalks during the '60s as world heavyweight
champion.

AUSTRALIA'S Commonwealth featherweight champion Bobby Dunne
defends his title at the Melbourne Festival Hall on Monday against the
man he won the title from last November, New Zealand's Toro George. It
will be Dunne's first title defence.

WALLACE " BUD " SMITH, the former lightweight champion of the
world who' was shot dead last week in Cincinatti, Ohio,' will never be
ranked among the all-time greats. But he was an honest workmarl who
had to strive hard for his success and thoroughly deserved it when it
finally came.

BILLY CONN said it first. After he had come within an ace of stealing a
decision from the fabulous Joe Louis and annexing the world heavyweight
crbwn, only to thrbw it all away by neglecting his boxing, the
beaten Billy defended his impetuosity' with the classic comment:
" What's the use of being Irish if you can't lose your head?"

A FAVOURITE remark of T.V. commentator Harry Carpenter over the
years has been that the A.B.A. championships are always throwing up
exciting nfew faces. I'm not too sure about the accuracy of this statement
as the established stars usually tend to walk off with the titles. But in
1967 one exciting nfew face did emerge. His nam6 was Jackie Turpin.
