LET US salute Howard Winstone,
Britain's new
World champion. His greatest
victory crowned a
wonderful career of 55 professional,
and many more
amateur, contests and took
place at the Royal Albert
Hall, London, the same
ring where 16 years ago he
won his first national title
as a 12-year-old schoolboy.
He also made history by having
four attempts before
reaching his final goal.

KENNY COOPER, 1967
ABA featherweight champion,
took a great stride up the
ratings by outpointing Manchester's
Gerry McBride 
by a 40-38 margin over eight allaction
rounds. A less durable
lad than McBride would have
capsized under Cooper's insistent
short-arm punching for Cooper's
fourth professional contest was
his best to date.

HOWARD WINSTONE, of Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, is the new featherweight
champion of the world. He won the title by beating Mitsunori Seki of Japan at the
Royal Albert Hall, Referee Roland Dakin intervening, very prematurely we thought,
when Seki was cut above the right eye.
