JOHNNY CLARK gamely withstood a late rally
from veteran Italian Franco Zurlo t6 win the vacant
European bantamweight title. All three neutral
officials scored in favour of Clark after 15 interesting
and at times fiercely-fought rounds.
THE New Orleans fistic buffs jeered in derision as the young, James J. Corbett
retreated from the onrush of the mighty John L. Sullivan.
The champion's famed right cross was hurled at his opponent's lean jaw, and
again the challenger ducked, evaded, and retreated. Cries of " Stand up and fight!"
echoed through the Pelican Athletic Club.
FORMER world bantamweight champion Pete Herman
died here aged 77. Failing eyesight forced him
out of competitive boxing and he was totally blind
for the last 48 years of his life.
VICENTE RONDON returned to Florida after not
being espied in the area since Bob Foster laid him
low in two rounds. A different opponent in Oliver
Wright gave Rondon a needed win.
WELSH lightweight champion Wayne Bennett
(New Tredegar) is the star attraction of the Cardiff
ABC select team to meet Repton in a special charity
match at the Double Diamond Club, Caerphilly, on
Friday (April 27).
