MEXICAN warrior Daniel Ponce
De Leon, who won world belts at
super-bantam and feathenweight,
announced his retirement following
a ninth-round loss to Miguel
Roman. On June 7, over 7,000
fans at the Monumental Estadio de
Beisbol in Chihuahua witnessed the
34-year-old's demise - his third loss
in his last four outings - and then
heard him declare it was the end.
Two days later, the fighter confirmed
he was hanging up the gloves.

MATTHEW MACKLIN was arrested
in Dublin after an incident at 7.30am
on Thursday June 5. The fighter
was involved in an altercation that
resulted in him being arrested
for public order offences. He was
released with a caution.

MICHAEL SPROTT reached the
final of the Super 8 heavyweight
tournament in Auckland, New
Zealand, only to be knocked out
in the opening round by Kali
Meehan. The British veteran
outscored Martin Regan over
three sessions in the quarterfinals
of the June 5 tournament
before beating Antliony Hansen
- who beat an utterly shot
Hasim Rahman - to secure his
place in the final. Meehan, 44,
also defeated Hunter Sam and
Brice Ritani-Coe en-route to the
$100,000 star prize.

YOU have to look back many years
to find a major women's boxing
tournament from which Nicola
Adams, the reigning Olympic
champ going for her second
European crown, didn't emerge with
a medal. It was a shock therefore
when the decision in the flyweight
quarter-final went against Adams
in the European championships
at Polyvalent Hall in Bucharest,
Romania.
Adams had got off to a bad start
against Stoyka Petrova in that
quarter-final. The taller Bulgarian
caught Nicola flush with straight
backhands down the middle in the
first round. But Adams steered
herself back into the contest. The
decision however went against her
and it was unanimous.

AFTER Lambton Street ABC's show
in May, the club's Gary Bunting
writes: "We had current pro English
lightweight champion Kirk Goodings
as guest of honour to present the
trophies and prizes (every boxer
received a trophy plus a copy of the
Boxing News Annual).
"Best Lambton Street Junior Boxer
went to young Jimmy Stevens and
Best Lambton Street Senior Boxer
went to Anthony Austin who is in his
first season as a Senior.
"Top of the bill ended up with an
elite-class bout between Lambton
Street's Bobby Begg and West
Leeds' tenacious Jack Sellers,
with Sellers coming out on top via
unanimous decision after three
rounds of compelling action that had
the crowd on their feet.
