FORMER three-weight world titlist
Miguel Cotto will return to the ring
with Freddie Roach as his trainer.
Pedro Diaz, who guided the Puerto
Rican to just one win in his three
most recent outings, is the casualty
of Cotto reaching a crossroads.
The 32-year-old's opponent is not
finalised but Delvin Rodriguez
looks the likely rival in Orlando on
October 5. Cotto will train with
Roach at his Wild Card Gym in
Hollywood.
OERECK CHISORA took time out of
his preparations for his July 20 clash
with Malik Scott to watch domestic rival
David Price lose to Tony Thompson for a
second time. The heavyweight's promoter,
Frank Warren, has often discussed the
possibility of matching his charge with
Price. But after the
Merseysider was hacked
to defeat in five rounds,
'Del Boy' Insists a fight
against Price held no
interest.
MELTON MOWBRAY heavyweight
Paul Butlin is fuming at the
controversial finish to his fight with
unbeaten Scot Gary Cornish in
the latter's hometown of Inverness
last weekend (see page 21). Butlin
was counted out by referee Kenny
Pringle at the end of the fifth from
what our man at ringside felt was a
body shot, but Butlin insisted - and
still vehemently believes - was a
low blow.
SAM "BULLET" BOWEN is putting
together the Plan B that will bring
him an ABA title. Bowen last month
completed a hat-trick of Haringey
Box Cup golds - but Earl Shilton
coach Craig Perkins says a rethink
is needed to win the prize he really
wants.
Bowen is an all-action
powerhouse - "every punch is
hurtful" said Perkins - and he
claimed four national titles at
junior level. But in the senior ABAs,
he has fallen short at the quarterfinal
stage to Robbie Davies and
Josh Kelly, who won last season.
"Sam lets himself down against
the top boxers," said Perkins, "and
he needs a Plan B to beat them.
"That's what we are going to
be working on in the gym. Sam
needs to find a way to beat these
skilful boxers if he wants to win
the ABAs and I know how much he
wants to win the ABAs."
