FRANKIE GAVIN 1s keen to put a nearly
disastrous 2011 behind him and thinks he
could be knocking on the door for a world
title by the end of the year.
The gifted former World Amateur
champion was pushed
to the wire by Curtis
Woodhouse last year and
then pulled out of a fight
with tough Frenchman
Frank Haroche Horta with
less than 48 hours to go
before the first bell.
Beset by personal
problems, Gavin spent the remainder of
2011 trying to address the Issues.
He returned home to Birmingham,
moved In with his mother and began
working with his former amateur coach,
Tom Chaney.

SIR HENRY COOPER, who died aged
76 in May last year, left £747,098
in his will - his detached house in
Hildenborough is thought to have
made up the bulk of it - to his
sons Henry and John. The former
British and European heavyweight
champion suffered losses in the
early 90s after becoming a 'name'
at the Lloyd's of London insurance
market'and sold the three Lonsdale
Belts he won outright. In his final
years, Cooper joked with envy about
the purses earned by active top
British boxers.

FORMER European and British
bantamweight champion Ian Napa
has retired at the age of 33. The
Hackney resident, who was born in
Zimbabwe, made his decision due to
cataract in his left eye. He will have
an operation on February 16.

HARWICH Amateur Boxing Club's
annual winter show took place
at the town's Park Pavilion on
December 10. Senior featherweight
Joey Avenell [pictured, taken by
Dove £dworcfsy delighted the home
crowd in his four-twos with Canvey
Island's Danny Cole. Southpaw
Cole took the opening minute with
his aggressive advances, only to
see the experienced Avenell settle
into his stride and start delivering'
accurate shots of his own. This
was the pattern as Avenell began
to pull away. The Hara/ich boxer
really turned on the style in the last
to round off an impressive display
with a unanimous points win.
Two brothers registered wins
for the Harwich club. Alfie Smith
took on Gravesham's Kane Jones
and struggled to cope with his
opponent's surges at first. Knowing
a big last round was needed, Alfie
. turned up the heat and battled
his way back into contention to
take a majority decision. Tommie
Smith went over old ground against
former victim Travis Howe (Norwich
Diamonds ABC). Howe took the first
before Tommie turned it around,
scoring well to head and body for a
unanimous points win.
