AS we went to press Amir Khan was
waiting on the IBF's ruling in regard
to a rematch with Lamont Peterson
after the WBA ordered the return
citing "multiple irregularities".
These include "questionable
decisions" from referee Joseph
Cooper - who docked two points
from Khan and didn't award him a
knockdown during his December
loss in Washington - and IBF official
Mustafa Ameen's mysterious
appearance at ringside which cast
doubt on the validity of the bout's
scoring.
AUDLEY HARRISON returns on April
14 against Chelsea's Ali Adams in
a 10-rounder at the Brentwood
Centre. The 41-year-old [oboi/e]
hasn't fought since being blasted in
three by David Haye in November
2010, and last year took part in
television series Strictl\/ Come
Dancing.
TAKAO SAKURAI, the only Japanese
to win an Olympic boxing gold
medal, died of oesophagal cancer
on January 10. He was 70.
Sakurai, a southpaw, won the
title on home soil in Tokyo in
October 1964, although you could
not question the merit of his finals
triumph - he floored South Korea's
Chung Shin Cho three times for a
second-round stoppage victory. His
hardest bout in those Games was
probably his first, a 4-1 majority
points win over Dartford's Brian
Packer.
YWO 'world' title fights headline an
interesting Australian card at the
Derwent Entertainment Centre in
Hobart, Tasmania on March 7. IBF
featherweight champion Billy DIb
defends his belt against mandatory
challenger Eduardo Escobedo,
while IBF middleweight boss Daniel
Geale takes on Ghana's Osumanu
Adama. Also on the card Is fringe
heavyweight contender Kali
Meehan tackling Travis Walker.
Before that, the nation hosts
another interesting battle on
February 19. Garth Wood, who
sprang to fame In 2010 with
an upset victory over Anthony
Mundine, takes on the experienced
Sam Sollman in a 12-round battle
at the Olympic Park Sports Centre
in Homebush, New South Wales.
