DAVID HAVE rejected the chance
to fight Vitali Klitschko at the
beginning of September according
to Bernd Boente of K2 Promotions.
"He had the contract for three
weeks but yet again we didn't hear
anything," claimed Boente. "I'm sure
he decided to pick the easier option
and fight against Chisora just like
he did when he fought Nikolai
Valuev instead of Vitali In 2009. He
was always afraid of Vitali."
SALFORD'S Wayne Barker, former
middleweight and promoter who
opened Manchester's Fighting Fit
gym in 2001, has died of bowel
cancer aged 52. A tearaway as a
child, Barker was handed over to
travellers at the age of 1 2 and
learned to fight. After a spell in
prison he ended up In the USA
where he sparred with, among
others, Wilfred Benltez and Bobby
Czyz. He would eventually return
to Britain, after losses to Fulgencio
Obelmejias and Teddy Mann, and
retire for good In 1987 with a
record of 1 2 - 5 - 1 (3).
LIGHT-WELTERWEIGHT Nick Casal,
26, of Niagara Falls, New York, was
attacked by a gang wielding golf
clubs while out with his girlfriend
on Friday (May 1 1 ) night. The
attackers are believed to include
her ex-boyfriend, and Casal, 22-4-
1 (17), was left with a possible
broken arm, multiple lacerations
and severe head wounds.
BIRTLEY ABC scored a
magnificent four out of four in
the National Junior ABA finals
at Batley's Frontier Club, twins
Luke and Pat McCormack
joining John Ruddick and
Callum French in registering
wide points victories to secure
more success for the well run'
club from the North-East.
Repton's four titles were
garnered in differing ways.
Sunny Edwards at 46 kgs
benefitted from a majority
decision against Ryan Briscoe,
Everton Red Triangle, after
temporary problems with the
computer scoring system before
Harvey Horn, 48 kgs, and then
James Branch, 80 kgs, (thanks
to a countback) outpointed
Northside's Dillon Manning
and Keiran Robertson of
Newbiggin respectively. ^
Tommy Buckley at
86 kgs Class 6 didn't even
need to throw a punch, he
received a walkover due to an
administrative error.
There were double
celebrations too for Bury ABC's
Muhammed AM and Sahir
Iqbal, who both impressed
en-route to wide points
victories in the Class 4 section
respectively over Harry
Connelly, Hooks, and Jordan
Dhajal, Repton.
Quickest victory of the
weekend came when Eastside's
Steed Woodhall (81 kgs.
Class 6) halted Combe Martin's
Jack Taylor In the first of a
four-twos, sending him to the
canvas twice in the process.
Standout performances on
the opening day came from
Oliver Simpson of Kelly's ABC,
who looked exceptional whilst
seeing off West Ham's Sam
Cox, and King's Heath's Ruben
Arrowsmith, who had a little
too much of everything for
Finchley's Eunice Chaima.
Best bout of that first
afternoon was the 57 kgs Class
6 clash between Lynn's Gerry
McDonagh and Rotunda's Tom
Wilson, the 26-15 scorellne
failing to sufficiently recognize,
just how close the at times
breathtaking contest was.
McDonagh's clubmate
Frankie Newman (75 kgs.
Class 4) was also among
Saturday's winners while West
Ham ABC experienced mixed
fortunes, winning two and
losing five of their respective
finals.
Burmantofts ABC hosted the
event.
