JOSE LUIS CASTILLO could not
make weight for his contracted
1451b bout against Jose Miguel
Cotto on the Danny Carcla-Erik
Morales undercard, The Mexican,
whose past is littered with weightmaking
Issues, scaled 147.5lbs
at the fifst attempt before
returning two hours later weighing
151,75lbs. Cotto, who had no
trouble hitting the desired mass,
refused to take the fight.

KEVIN RODNEY JNR, 4 1 (2),
is not getting carried away with
his recent success on the Sergio
Martinez-Matthew Macklin New
York undercard. The 28-year-old
middleweight prospect, trained by
his father Kevin Rooney, stopped
Anthony Shuff inside a round on
March 1 7 but he has no plans to
give up his full time PR job with
DIBella Entertainment.
"I didn't start fighting and predict
I'd become middleweight champion
of the world," said Rooney. "My
father and I agreed we're going
to take It step by step and that's
what we're doing. I've had some
really good sparring with Delvin
Rodriguez, one of the best llghtmlddleweights
In the world, and
he was shocked at how well I
performed. With my workload [at
DIBella] there will come a time
when I need to choose one or the
other but right now I can balance
both."

ENZO CALZAGHE was not in the
corner of Enzo Maccarinelli when
the Welshman controversially
dethroned British crulserweight
boss Shane McPhilbln on March 23
(see page 19) because he did not
take a mandatory first aid course
(purpose built for boxing) in Cardiff.
His licence had been reinstated by
the British Boxing Board of Control
under the condition that the course
was completed. It is understood
that the veteran trainer, who took
a break from the game when his
son Joe retired before returning to
train Maccarinelli, opted Instead to
take a St John's Ambulance first aid
course - one not recognised by the
Board. Dean Powell took Calzaghe's
place in Maccarlnelli's corner,

IN the Tyne, Tees & Wear-North West ABA
