IT has been announced that
Arturo Catti, 40-9 (31), will be
posthumously inducted into
Canastota's International Boxing
Hall of Fame. The former superfeather
and light-welter titlist, who
died in suspicious circumstances in
2009, will be joined by Virgil Hill
and Myung-Woo Yuh, Also gaining
entry are former referee Mills Lane,
and British writer Colin Hart.
Some experts have questioned
Catti's induction, believing his
accomplishments do not merit a
place in the Hall, However, few
can deny the courage he displayed
inside the ring.
Hill, 50-7 (23), a long-term lightheavyweight
king who had some
success at cruiserweight, was
delighted to get the call.
"It is the biggest honor that's
ever been bestowed upon me," said
Hill. "It's more than winning the five
world titles and the Olympic silver
medal [in 1984]. It's the biggest
thing - outside of my children and
wife - that's ever happened to me."
The Class of 2013 also includes
lightweight Wesley Ramey and
middleweight Jeff Smith in the
Old-Timer Category (posthumous);
manager Arturo "Cuyo" Hernandez
in the Non Participant Category
(posthumous); cartoonist
Ted Carroll in the Observer
Category (posthumous); and Joe
Coburrr in the Pioneer Category
(posthumous). Inductees were
voted in by members of the Boxing
Writers Association aad a panel of
international boxing historians.
The Induction ceremony
weekend will take place from June
6-9 next year. "We're extremely
excited about the Class of 2013
and very much looking forward
to honouring the •24th class of
inductees," said Executive Director
Edward Brophy.
FORMER WBA lightweight
challenger Johnny Lira, known
affectionately as the "World Class
Pug", has died at 61. Lira halted
unbeaten Andy Ganigan in 1978
to earn his shot against Ernesto
Espana the following year. The
Chicago resident was halted in nine
roundstut fought on until 1984,
retiring ft 29-6-1 (15). He worked
as a judge and trainer. His family
and friends surrounded him when
he died on December 8, at the
Illinois Masonic Hospital.
World Youth
champions
SIGNS point to an exciting future
for British amateur boxing after the
World Youth Championships, which
concluded on December 7 in Yerevan,
Armenia.
England's Oliver Simpson and
Hughle Fury both won gold medals.
At 52 kgs Simpson beat Kurt
Walker, Ireland's only medallist,
14-12 in the semi-final before
meeting Jeyvler Clntron Ocasio in
the final.
The Puerto Rican had reached the
quarter-final stage of the London
Olympics but Simpson, after a thirdround
comeback, beat Ocasio on
countback after he'd levelled the
scores 10-10.
In the super-heavyweight final
Fury enjoyed a clear 10-6 win over
India's Narender Berwal.
Scotland's Scott Forrest battled
his way through to the 81 kgs final,
where he met local boxer NIkol
' Arutyunov, who forced him to
accept a 13-9 defeat.
England's Joshua Kelly; 64
kgs, and Danny Williams, 91 kgs,
also won bronze medals, making it
England's best ever performance at
AFTER dealing with complications
over their venue and late
withdrawals, Portsmouth kept their
November 20 show on the road, with
the Army notably taking a female
bout at less than a day's notice.
