FORMER WBC super-bantamweight
champion Toshiaki Nishioka
has decided to retire at the age of
36. The Japanese fighter, 39-5-3
(24), walks away from the sport
following a comprehensive loss to
Nonito Donaire in October.
"Boxing gave me so much
happiness and I was able to
experience special feelings. I was
touched and moved with strong
emotion from fighting and boxing,"
Nishioka said at a press conference.
"To be honest, I feel 1 can still
become world champion against
anybody except for Nonito Donaire,
There is no more motivation and
emotional satisfaction I will receive
by fighting anybody other than the
last fight I prepared myself and
fought against Donaire."
Nishioka failed to beat WBC
bantamweight champion Veeraphol
Sahaprom in four tight encounters
from 2000 to 2004 before claiming
the super-bantamweight belt in
2009. He successfully defended it
against jhonny Gonzalez, Rendall
Munroe and Rafael Marquez.
LIAM WALSH has had to withdraw
from his WBO lightweight shot at
Ricky Burns after he was hurt in a
car crash. The 26-year-old injured his
back and was advised by doctors that
he would not be fit to fight.
"I'm devastated at the moment
that I'm not going to be challenging
Burns for the world title," said
Walsh. "I have followed the advice
of the doctors and withdrawn from
the fight. The doctors have said
hopefully I'll be able to resume
training in four weeks. To fight for the
world'title is my dream and this Is just
a setback and hope that I can get the
opportunity to fight Burns again."
The December 15 card, which also
features George Groves-Glen Johnson
and Billy Joe Saunders, will go ahead
and as we went to press Walsh's
replacement was still to be confirmed.
LAST week we reported that
former WBA welterweight
champion James Page, 42, was
hoping his comeback would lead to a
Rocky Balboa-style world title shot.
But in his first fight after an 11-year
absence he was stopped by Rahman
Yusubov - a loser in his previous
seven - in two rounds in Sacramento,
California.
FATHER and daughter duo Rob
and Brydie O'Keefe boxed on
the same bill on the Shrewsbury
and Severnside November 2
show.
"To the best of my knowledge
I don't think that's ever
happened before in this country,"
said Colin Hough, who's been
involved with the club since
1947.
Brydie boxed Patsy Smith
from March ABC, losing on
points, and Rob took on Lee
Hargreaves from Castle ABC,
who had to retire with a bad
injury to his shoulder.
Hough added, "I would like
to say a sincere thank you to
the two clubs who made this
possible."

Kelly a 64 kgs bronze.
"To win five medals in a European
Championship is a fantastic
achievement, particularly for a
young and relatively inexperienced
team," said England coach Martin
Utiey. "I was impressed by the
mature and stylish performances put
in by all of our boxers and I'm really
looking forward to seeing them
progress on the international scene."
Amy Broadhurst secured a
Junior gold for Ireland after she beat

in the last round of the 57 kgs final.
