ACCORDING to Richard Schaefer,
the WBA have stripped Lamont
Peterson of their lightwelterweight
title after he failed
a drug test prior to a rematch with
Amir Khan. The vacant belt will be
on the line when Khan challenges
WBC boss Danny Garcia on July
14 in Las Vegas. Peterson is still
recognised by the IBF, who are
waiting to see medical records
before deciding their course of
action.
Meanwhile, Peterson has
asked the Nevada State Athletic
Commission to suspend their
hearing about granting him a
licence. In the immediate aftermath
of the positive test, Peterson
applied for a continuation of his
boxing licence anyway. His team
initially requested that their case
be heard on June 14 but they
pulled out of that date. It was
moved back to July 14 but Keith
Kizer has told ESPN that they
have received another notice of
suspension from Peterson's local
counsel, Pete Bernhard. They hope
to have medical evidence ready for
an August hearing.

BARRIE LEE, a Scottish Area
middleweight champion in 2004,
has been found dead at the age of
30 in Ghana. Lee, from Arbroath,
sparred Ricky Hatton and boxed on
the world title undercards of Joe
Calzaghe and Scott Harrjson.
The circumstances of his death
remained a mystery as we went to
press. The Scot, who last fought in
2006 and had a record of 11-2-1,
washout in Ghana working for an
oil and gas company, Weatherford
International. It is understood he
went out for a run on the day of
his death (Wednesday June 27) and
some reports suggest he may have
collapsed in the bath. Although he
had been out of the ring for six
years, he kept himself fit.

DESPITE the Loss of several bouts due
to late withdrawals, what remained on
this Wayne Carmichael promotion proved
decent fare with the six-threes between
local puncher Patrick Liam Walsh
(lost 8 i/2lbs) and 24-hour sub William
Warburton (lOst i i l b s ) of Atherton living
up to its bill-topper status.
Warburton certainly hadn't come
just to make up the numbers and he
contributed well to the three cracking last
rounds, both men enjoying spells on top
before referee Mike Alexander turned in a
59-57 card in favour of Walsh.
