IN news from the EBU, Bristol's
British super-flyweight champion
LEE HASKINS, getting ready for
Commonwealth counterpart DON
BROADHURST next week
(December 11), has been
nominated for a European title
crack down at flyweight. Champion
is Italian Andrea Sarritzu and EBU
General Secretary Enza Jacaponi
has told us that even if Haskins
loses to Broadhurst, his shot is
safe. "If he weighs above the
flyweight limit," said Jacaponi, "It
is not a problem."
The deadline for private
agreement is February 14.
Elsewhere, EBU champ at superbantam
RENDALL MUNROE has
been nominated to meet British
boss and promotional stablemate
JASON BOOTH. The deadline for
agreement is February 20, but
Frank Maloney, who promotes both,
will ask for an extension as Munroe
has just had a mandatory defence.
PAUL McCLOSKEY must defend
his EBU light-welter belt against
Italian GIUSEPPE LAURI, with
agreements due by February 6,
while RYAN RHODES' mandatory
light-middle defence against
CHRISTOPHE CANCLAUX goes to
bids - if an agreement has not
been reached - on Thursday
(December 10).
Canclaux faces former WBA
champ JOACHIM ALCINE in
IVIontreal tomorrow (Saturday,
December 5).

ITV4 may not be leaving the sport
at the end of this year after all.
Following huge viewing figures for
the Brentwood show (pages 16-17)
at the weekend - 625,000 at its
peak, beating the recent
heavyweight Prizefighter - some
insiders at the commercial
broadcaster have indicated their
boxing coverage could continue in
2010.
The current deal with Hennessy
Sports, we are led to believe,
officially runs out in a year's time
but there are clauses that allow the
agreement to be ended early, and
ITV4 currently have no boxing on
their 2010 schedule. However, with
both Mick Hennessy and ITV
delighted by the Brentwood result,
and the Big FigM Uve having been
up against the likes of The X
Factor and Strictly Come Dancing,
there is a chance the deal will
continue, although the broadcaster
is believed to be also looking at
other options within the sport,
including DAVID HAYE'S
forthcoming UK fight with JOHN
RUIZ. Let's hope these rumours are
soon substantiated.

TONY OAKEY'S English light-heavy
title challenge to Norwich
champion DANNY MclNTOSH could
now go ahead on January 15, on
the undercard of a Hatton
Promotions' show topped by
MAHHEW MACKUN'S European
middleweight title defence against
Russian DMITRIY PIROG. The fight
was originally set for this month
but Mcintosh injured his ankle.
While Oakey rates Mcintosh, he
really has one eye on British and
Commonwealth king Nathan Cleverly,
the Welshman who widely outscored
Tony for the latter crown last year,
"tt still eats away at me," said
Oakey of the defeat. "Coming in at
three and a half weeks' notice like
that. It looks like Cleverly is going
to be special but I'd still like to fight
him again with proper notice."

FINCHLEY coach Johnny Oliver was
delighted his club was the most
successful at the London Novice finals
on November 22, winning four titles.
(Dale Youth won three).
In Class A. Ben Illeyemi had a
walkover at heavyweight while superheavy
Anthony Joshua stopped C.
Francis (Fitzroy Lodge) and knocked
out P. McDonagh (Peacock), both in
two rounds.
McDonagh took three counts in the
final.
In Class B welterweight Norris
Thompson stopped Aaron Brown in
two rounds and outpointed Bexley's
Danny Maguire.
And light-heavy James Duffy boxed
a straight final, outpointing T. Taylor
from Rosehill.
Talking of Joshua, he had a big win
on November 12 when he travelled to
the Midlands to beat Euro Youth
Champs rep Fraser Clarke on his own
Burton ABC show.
Said Oliver, "Anthony won on a
majority, but our coach Sean Murphy
says it wasn't a majority" - meaning
Joshua won without doubt.
Joshua is only 20 years old, 6ft 7ins
and weighs just over 100 kgs. After the
London Novices his record stands at 10
wins in 11 bouts.
Finchley's fine form continued when
the "pre-quarter-finals" between
London and Western Counties were
held at the Five Star club on November
29. The North London club again won
four from four.
In Class A Illeyemi outpointed S.
Clark from Devonport while Joshua
knocked out Poole's G. Harvey with a
left jab in round two.
In Class B, Thompson had a stunning
first-round knockout win over Leonis
Jersey's S. Goggin while Duffy ko'd L.
Diffy (Poole) in round two.
On Sunday (December 6) the Senior
Novice quarter-finals involving Home
Counties/Combined Services versus
Western Counties/London happen at
The Regal, 300 Cowley Road, Oxford
OX4 lUR. First bell is at 1.30 pm.
