FRANK WARREN'S team are currently
in negotiations with Danny Williams
for the British heavyweight champion
to defend against their undefeated
prospect Derek Chisora on the June
27 0 2 Arena bill featuring Amir Khan
challenging WBA light-welter boss
Andreas Kotelnik.
Warren threw out a challenge to
Williams at last week's press
conference and the "Brixton Bomber"
responded exclusively on
www.boxingnewsonline.net, telling us
that he would happily meet, and defeat,
the unbeaten Finchley hope if the
money was to his liking.
"He's strong and determined," said
Williams of Chisora. "But I was
shocked he beat Sam Sexton. I've
beaten a lot of unbeaten fighters and I'd
like to add Chisora to my list."
Chisora is just as confident, but he
will have to get past Melton Mowbray's
Paul Butlin first, at York Hall next
Friday (May 22).
Butlin felt he deserved the win last
week against Lee Swaby (see Action,
page 21) and is chasing a rematch.
"I thought I was robbed," he seethed.
"When the boxer touches my glove in
the last round and says Congrats surely
he thinks he has lost.
"I want a rematch but not on his
turf"
Butlin now takes on Chisora in an
eight-round rematch, the Finchley man
having outscored him over four last
year.
THE great domestic clash between
British lightweight champion John
Murray and former domestic and
European king Jon Thaxton will be on
for September - if Murray makes it
through a voluntary defence against
Stoke's Scott Lawton first.
That should take place on a June 13
Hennessy Sports show at the Robin
Park Centre in Wigan, meaning
Lawton's May 29 Stoke eliminator
against Gary Buckland is off
Thaxton will also fight in the
interim, most likely on a July 18
Norwich bill topped by hometowner
Danny Mcintosh clashing with
Commonwealth light-heavyweight
champion Nathan Cleverly for the
vacant British title.
The idea is that with three title wins
each under their belts by September -
assuming Murray defeats Lawton - the
Murray-Thaxton September
showdown will see the winner get a
Lonsdale Belt for keeps.
