IAN NAPA has been struck down by
flu and his voluntary defence of the
European bantamweight title, set for
January 23 at Fenton Manor in Stoke,
will be rescheduled for London in
March.
The Stoke show still goes ahead, now
headlined by the vacant British and
Commonwealth flyweight title fight
between hometowner Chris Edwards
and Wayne Bloy, and a Commonwealth
welter final eliminator between No. 1
challenger Philip Kotey of Ghana and
Heywood's Mark Thompson.
Also on the bill, new English
lightweight king Scott Lawton
defends against Henry Castle, good
amateur Samir Mouniemne makes his
pro debut and prospects Larry
Olubamiwo and John Lewis
Dickenson appear.
Show promoter Frank Maloney also
revealed he had matched two of his
fighters. Commonwealth light-welter
champ, and WBC No. 3, Ajose
Olusegun with English ruler Scott
Haywood, on February 27 at the
Barnsley Metrodome. That means
Haywood will not defend against Lenny
Daws on Hennessy Sports' January 17
show, and will likely vacate.
The Barnsley show will be topped by
European super-bantam boss Rendall
Munroe's rematch with Kiko
Martinez, whom he defeated to win
the title. The mandated British superfeather
eliminator between
Yorkshiremen Carl Johannesson
(Leeds) and Gary Sykes (Dewsbury)
could also feature in its natural home.
Busy Maloney also has a show on
March 6, at Wigan's Robin Park Arena,
, headlined by Jamie Moore's longawaited
vacant European light-middleweight
title fight with Italy's former
'world' champion Michele Piccirillo,
after Maloney won the purse bids.
Prizefighter middleweight champ
Martin Murray will also appear on
that show, while Ireland's Olympic
bronze medallist Darren Sutherland
has his second pro fight.

WINKY WRIGHT and PAUL
WILLIAMS look likely to meet
on April 11, live on HBO. Winky
confirmed he lias agreed the fight
- his first in almost two years - and
that he is just waiting on Williams'
team to firm up their side.
The fight will be made at
middleweight ( l i s t 6lbs) and
Wright respects his opponent.
"He's a very good fighter," said
Wright. "His awkwardness, height
and reach make him tough. He beat
Antonio Margarito and I give him
points for that, but no-one else on
his record has any substance.
"I'm a better fighter. I can adapt
and do whatever it takes to win.
He's getting me at the right time,
after a two-year layoff. If I was
busy, it'd be too easy for me.
"After I take care of Williams,
I want [loe] Calzaghe and I'd come
to the UK."

GERRY PENALOSA, WBO
bantamweight champion, will act as
consultant to countryman Nonito
Donaire for a March 15 WBO superflyweight
title challenge to Mexican
Fernando Montiel in the Philippines.
Veteran southpaw Penalosa is under
pressure to defend against mandatory
challenger Eric Morel, with purse bids
called for Monday (January 12).
Presumably, he will keep himself fit
while working with Donaire (not as
trainer, as was first reported) although
a planned non-title fight against Rey
Bautista conqueror Heriberto Ruiz this
month was likely to be rejected by the
WBO.
But it is not known whether
Penalosa's promoters. Golden Boy, will
enter the Morel fight bids as they are
reportedly discouraged by Penalosa
having rejected several offers for other
fights. This could mean the Morel fight
landing in Puerto Rico. Penalosa has
asked to be freed from Golden Boy.

WALES beat Australia 7-3 in a
"development" boxers match at the
National Sports Centre in Cardiff on
December 8.
It was held in the Upper Hall, which
will now become the permanent training
facility for Welsh amateur boxing.
All tickets were sold, making for a
great atmosphere in the packed hall.
Zach Davies, a silver medal winner
at October's Commonwealth Youth
Games India,"was too clever for his
Brant Rice, winning 18-1.
Craig Evans is another name to
watch. The Tammer gold medallist and
Europeans rep stopped Jay Toope in
the first round. Evans led 4-0.
The original pairings had Evans
against Daniel Main, who in the
end lost to Sean McGoldrick, and
Toope against Euro bronze medallist
(at bantam) Andrew Selby.
