AUDLEY HARRISON, the fallen
2000 Olympian, has been left fuming
after a snub from Hayemaker Boxing
for him to appear on their big March
28 Liverpool show.
In the process, "he called out
former friend and world
cruiserweight champion David Haye
for an all-British heavyweight showdown
as the Bermondsey man's
negotiations with the Klitschko
brothers have seemingly stalled.
"I am happy to step into the ring
with David and pay him back after the
last sparring session we had where he
took liberties," said Harrison, whose
brief promotional alliance with Frank
Warren is over.
"To make it worse, Lennox Lewis
had come to see me. David and his
sidekick [trainer] Adam [Booth]
turned up unannounced and tried to
blast me out.
"All I wanted was an opportunity
to appear on the Ryan Rhodes
undercard in March. I'm told, 'Sorry
bud, no room for you'. He didn't
even speak to me; he had Adam
speak to me, which was even more
insulting.
"I'm^ure the British public would
love to see you send me into retirement.
I dare you to make this match."
Adam Booth said that no-one at
Hayemaker Boxing had any comment
to make on Audley's outburst and
never would.

TRAINER Walter Smith, a man
Emanuel Steward called the
"backbone of the Kronk", died
two weeks ago of congestive heart
failure, aged 94.
Born in 1914 in Alabama, Smith
helped to train Steward after they
met in 1959, when the future
Kronk head coach was just 14.
When Steward decided to become a
pro trainer, taking Thomas Hearns
and Mickey Goodwin as his first two
disciples. Smith came to work with
him in the gym and the comer, and
an era of sustained success began.
"He was very quiet but very
well-organised," said Steward.
"You'd never see a picture of him;
no-one knew who he was. That was
the kind of guy he was.
"He permitted me to become a
Hall of Fame trainer and manager
as I could go away when I needed
to and leave everything to him."
Between them. Smith and
Steward produced many champions,
including Hearns, Hilmer Kenty and
Britain's own Dennis Andries.
Smith was working with fighters
until just a few years ago. He is survived
by his wife of 74 years, Carrie.

LAST season's Home Counties
welterweight champion Phil Gill said
goodbye to the amateurs with a bout
on his own Cheshunt show at club HQ
on January 30.
Stevenage's Justin Perry spoiled
the party somewhat by outpointing
Gill, although their 4 x 2s was close.
"I boxed badly," admitted honest
Phil. "I was trying to land the big one
as I thought I hurt him. He's awkward
- doesn't throw any straight shots and
is hard to read but very open to a big
backhand."
Gill, who says he will do light-welter
in the pros, came in at 66 kgs because
he knew Perry was a 68 kgs boxer.
"I was trying to hard to put on a
good show for my last fight," said a
disappointed Gill. "But Ashley Sexton
gave out trophies, so the kids were
loving that, and it was a good send-off
for me with loads of support."
Gill's debut is set for the Troxy
Nightclub in Limehouse on Thursday
(March 5).
In another senior four-twos,
experienced Chris Truman (Aston)
outpointed Cheshunt's outpd Alfie
Morris, while over 3 x 2s Dave
Hookey of Slough was a points winner
over the host club's Dave Leo.
