JON THAXTON says the Marquez-
Diaz thriller inspired him to carry
on boxing and he is now seeking a
rematch with Anthony Mezaache,
the Frenchman who beat him for
the European lightweight title two
weeks ago. Thaxton speaks out at
www.boxingnewsonline.net.
Also on our website, Chris Akers
talks to John Tandy, a Brit trainer
succeeding in America, Tris Dixon
gives an extra slant to KHANBARRERA
and you can win tickets
to RYAN RHODES-ANTHONY SMALL.
ROBERT ALCAZAR, Oscar De La
Hoya's first trainer who coached the
Golden Boy for much of his
professional career, has replaced
Kenny Adams in the corner of
unbeaten Venezuelan sensation
Edwin Valero.
Valero, who boxes Antonio Pitalua
for the vacant WBC lightweight title in
Austin on April 4, is 24-0 (24) and now
promoted by Top Rank.
But Valero's manager Jose Castillo
wants Valero to change his style and
thinks Alcazar could be the man to
help Edwin improve on his jab and
footwork.
Castillo's grown concerned about
the way Valero gets involved in wild
exchanges.
Valero is training at the South Coast
Kickboxing Gym in Costa Mesa,
California, and wants Juan Manuel
Marquez after Pitalua.
REPORTS that Joan Guzman will
box former European champion
Yuri Romanov for the vacant IBF
lightweight belt in Las Vegas on
May 1 are untrue.
Guzman is under suspension
in Mississippi after having failed to
make weight last year for a world
lightweight title challenge to thenchamp
Nate Campbell. IBF rules state
that anyone banned by a US state
becomes ineligible to fight for their
titles.
Romanov should now face
Venezuelan Fernando Angulo for
the belt.
However, There will be two Vegas
shows on the eve of Ricky Hatton's
clash with Manny Pacquiao. Along
with Zab Judah's fight (see separate
story above) Top Rank promote a bill
at the Hard Rock Hotel, featuring
Urbane Antillon and Alfonso Gomez.
LONDON'S ABA Championships start
on Thursday (March 19) with the
North West Divs at Brent Town Hall.
Pick of the action may well come at
middleweight, where the outstanding
entries are likely to be a pair of southpaws
in James Easy (Haringey) and
John Ryder (Angel).
Ryder warmed up by beating Luke
Batstone (Moulsecoomb) in the final
round of a 3 x 3s on the March 5
Finchley show at the Bostondome in
Tufnel Park.
The compact Ryder gave nearly 2
kgs against the 6ft 2ins Batstone, but
was too experienced for an opponent
who was disqualified upon receiving
his third warning for holding.
Debutant C. Onwuazor (Angel)
outpointed Newham's S. Roberts.
Both scaled 73 kgs in this senior bout.
