JAMIE MOORE defends his
European light-middleweight title
for the second time against
Frenchman JIMMY COLAS, 27-6
(11), on July 24 at Leigh Indoor
Sports Centre.
Colas has never been stopped
and took Moore's mandatory
Christophe Canclaux 12 rounds in
January 2007, only to lose on
points, so Moore could make a big
impact by halting his challenger.
GARY DAVIES defends the British
bantamweight tKle against former
champion and ex-European titleholder
IAN NAPA on the same bill.
The St Helens banger gets
relathre home advantage on a Frank
Maloney show that Sky will televise.
SPENCER FEARON, former pro and
now a promoter, who was severely
reprimanded for violating a number
of Board rules during his
Kensington show last March, is
planning another bill on July 11.
"Certain failings were noted,"
said Fearon of his first show. "But
the Southern Area Council accepted
my explanation and that the
offences would not occur again."
Fearon promotes again at
Kensington Town Hall. His show
features the return of Mongolia's
former WBU featherweight champion
CHOI TSEVEENPUREV, the 27-4
Mongolian who hasn't boxed since
he knocked out Derry Mathews in
five rounds in April 2008.
Joint top of the bill will be
Albanian middle KRESNIK QATO, who
has been sparring James DeGale.
THE MOST recent defector from
Nick Durandt's stable is CASSIUS
BALOYI, who has announced he
would be joining Manny Fernandes.
Baloyi has stated publicly that he
feels he was "betrayed" by
Durandt.
Another recent floor crossing
saw the WBC No 1 contender and
South African bantamweight
champion SIMPHIWE VETYEKA join
the former IBF super-bantamweight
champion Welcome Ncita. Vetyeka
will fight exclusively for Rodney
Berman's Golden Gloves
Promotions Group.
ISAAC CHILEMBE, the ABU
super-middleweight champion,
recently left Durandt to join Colin
Nathan's Hot Box gym, as did IBO
super-featherweight champion,
ZOLANI MARAU. The pair will also
box exclusively for Golden Gloves.
Meanwhile, Gert Strydom, who
was responsible for training
Klassen against Baloyi, has made a
miraculous recovery from the
serious injuries he sustained in a
stabbing incident recently. Gert is
back training fighters.
ANGEL ABC middleweight John
Ryder was back to his briliantbest with
a convincing points success on the June
5 Romford ABC open tournament at
Dukes Hall, Hornchurch.
Southpaw Ryder, who'weighed 76
kgs, unanimously outscored Five Star's
21-year-old Lee M a r k h am in a special
3 x 3s. The Islington-based man also
captured the award for Best Boxer of
the Night.
Markham, who had won two thirds
of his 33 bouts, proved a good test for
Ryder, who thus ended his club season
on a high note after disappointments in
both the North West Divs and the
recent Haringey Box Cup (although his
points defeat in the latter was highly
controversial).
Clearly, his club coaches Colin Lake
and Ivor "The Engine" Jones had put in
much work with John over the past
couple of weeks.
Against Markham, he seemed back
to his very best form, which augurs well
for the new season in the autumn.
HODDESDON Boxing Academy's
annual open-air extravaganza is
t o m o r r ow (Saturday June 20) at the
King & Tinker p u b in Enfield. Boxing
starts at 2.30pm and head coach Sab
Leo has matched 24 bouts.
Leo is hoping to get work for t he
Fowl brothers.
Ben, beaten in the ABA lightflyweight
semis, was entered in last
month's Haringey Box Cup but had
no opponent.
Older b r o t h e r James did box at the
Ally Pally, winning a m a j o r i t y over
Danny Perry (Norwich Lads) in the
Senior C final at 54 kgs.
Explained Leo, "I pushed James
up to b a n t am to get h im work but he
will box at flyweight on our show."
The Haringey event saw a
comeback for W i l l i am Clayden, a
former t o p junior with Guildford City
now in Hoddesdon colours.
Boxing at Class C 71 kgs (group 1),
Clayden unanimously outpointed
Ekrem Yerlikaya (B30-Norway) in the
semis and then got a m a j o r i t y over
Finchley's Billy Drohan in t h e final.
That was over 3 x 3s.
