Brock half-blind
CALVIN BROCK, America's former
world heavyweight title challenger,
has had to retire after going blind
in his right eye.
Brock had an operation for a
detached retina last November
following a defeat by Eddie
Chambers, but soon after lost
his sight.
Klitschko date
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO'S next
defence of the WBO, IBF and IBO
heavyweight belts will be against
TONY THOMPSON at the Color Line
Arena in Hamburg on July 12.
The match, though, is still pending
the blessing of the IBF because
undefeated ALEXANDER POVETKIN
is the official challenger.
MANCHESTER trainer Brian
Hughes, whose welterweight
MICHAEL JENNINGS put in an
excellent performance in Bolton
last Saturday, wanted to make it
clear he has coached the Chorley
man exclusively from the start of
his career.
DON KING has been back in prison
this week.
The promoter went with staff and
WBA executives, including boss
Gilberto Mendoza, to the El Renacer
penitentiary in Panama City to visit
Panama's WBA super-featherweight
champion Vicente Mosquera.
MATTHEW EDMONDS, given
something of a lesson in boxing
reality when he took a short-notice
Commonwealth bantam shot against
the vastly more experienced Jason
Booth last December, eased his
way back with a straightforward repeat
victory over Ghanaian Sumaila Badu
at the Newport Centre in Edmonds'
hometown.
