IRAN BARKLEY'S comeback did not
go ahead quite as planned. The 47-
year-old did get in the ring, but in a
non-sanctioned five-round
exhibition with the show's promoter.
Barkley fought Saturday night at
the Pi-Nee Waus Community Center
in Lapwai, Idaho. Promoter
Chauncy Welliver, an active
heavyweight, could not find a
suitable opponent for Barkley so
faced the ex-champ himself.
SAOUL MAMBY, 60, was also set
to fight but his medical papers did
come through in time. He worked
Barkley's corner. Barkley wants to
be licensed and told
Fightnews.com that he has
submitted his papers to the
New York State Athletic
Commission. He says he's
ready to undergo any tests.

UGHT-HEAVY ADRIAN DIACONU,
24-0 (15) vies for the WBC interim
title wKli Texas' 21-0 (17) CHRIS
HENRY on IHarch 29 in Bucltarest,
Romania on a Gankor Promotions
sliow.
As WBC boss CHAD DAWSON
defends against GLEN JOHNSON
on April 12, it seems to call into
doubt the need for an interim title
bout but the winner of Diaconu-
Henry is guaranteed the next shot
at Dawson or Johnson.
Diaconu was due a shot at
Dawson last summer but pulled
out with a hand injury.
Diaconu, a Romanian now based
in IMontreal who stopped Rico Hoye
last year, gets home advantage.
Henry, three years younger at
26, is the NABF and NABA champ.

UKEABL£ journeyman ROCKY MUSCUS,
a Greek based in Chertsey, has
retired.
He suffered his second consecutive
stoppage (see page 19) after having
lost 28 times on points. It signalled
to the 24-year-old that his boxing
days were over.
"I've had many hard fights," he
said. "Jim Evans [Rocky's trainer] sent
my contract back to the Board and
said I'm not to fight again. That hurt.
"But last week my heart gave up.
I tried my best. I took many fights
at short notice and gave away weight.
The punch that floored me was not
even hard. 1 just knew in my heart it
was over.^'
Muscus, 1-30, had fought some
good names. He said Ivor Bonavic,
who pushed him hard all the way, was
the best.
Though Rocky's record looks poor,
his is a success story. He came to
Britain with nothing, was considerably
overweight and had limHed ability.
But he shifted the pounds, got in
the ring and kept fighting even though
the decisions never went his way^
"All I ever wanted was to have
my picture in Boxing News."
We wish Muscus well.

BILLY JOE SAUNDERS made a
sensational start to the Olympic
qualifying tournament in Roseto degli
Abruzzi, Italy when he beat Russia's
Andrei Balanov.
Up against the reigning European
champion at welterweight, Saunders
stuck to his gameplan of a fast tempo
and sniping attacks to win 18-13.
The Hertfordshire 19-year-old
eventually proved too strong and fresh
for experienced Balanov (32), who had
led 6-1,11-6 and 13-12 after the first
three sessions.
The event concludes tomorrow
(Saturday March 1), with Beijing tickets
going to finalists at all weights plus
third-placers at 54, 57, 69 and 75.

KEIRON HARDING (Penarth) took the
top award on the Coors Brewery dinner
tournament organised by Highfields
ABA at the Ely Social Club.
The 17-year-old took the opening
round to find out Dowlais ABC's
Nathan Davies before going onto the
attack in the second. Stiff left jabs
invariably followed by powerful right
crosses were the hallmark of the cool
Penarth boxer, who took the unanimous
decision and with it Best Boxer.
