COMEBACKS in boxing generally
have a sorry tale attached to them
and, usually, the motivation is
money - or lack thereof.
But the announcement made by
37-year-old ANTON GILMORE of his
intention to make a comeback to
the ring after an 11-year absence
is accompanied by a poignant story
that has little to do with money.
The former super-bantamweight
'world' challenger is scheduled to
fight THOMPSON MAKWANA in a
six-rounder in a nursery
tournament at Emperor's Palace,
Kempton Park on Tuesday (July 29).
Chatting to me at a recent show
at Emperor's Palace, the former
fighter - who is today a gym owner
and an active trainer of
professional and amateur boxers -
said the motivation behind his
decision was his one-year-old son,
Aidan, who is suffering from a rare
condition known as tuberous
sclerosis and has multiple tumours
on his heart and brain.
"He is such a brave little fighter
- and if he can fight like that, then
I have to fight in honour of his
bravery," explained Anton.
Gilmore, one of boxing's nice
guys, twice challenged for the WBU
super-bantamweight title, losing on
points to Max Gomez in the US in
March 1996 and again, in his last,
fight, losing a close and
controversial decision to Cassius
Baloyi in Johannesburg a year later.
He made his professional debut
in April 1991, and retired with a
record of 21-3-2. His comeback
fight will be at super-featherweight.

LEICESTER'S bin-man RENDALL
MUNROE defends his European
super-bantam belt against
Armenian ARSEN MARTIROSYAN on
September 5 at the Harvey Hadden
Leisure Centre, Nottingham.
The show, appropriately tagged
"Working Class Hero", will take
place at the same venue as
Munroe's title-winning effort and
first defence.
Good support is provided by
SCOTT HAYWOOD'S English lightwelter
title shot against champion
NIGEL WRIGHT, the vacant English
lightweight title dispute between
JOHN FEWKES and MARTIN
GETHIN, and MATTHEW HATTON,
who returns from his defeat by
Craig Watson to face Ramsgate
prospect SCOTT WOOLFORD.
Sources at Sky indicate that a
win over Delroy Spencer last week
in Dagenhani was not enough to
seal Sean Hughes' shot against
Munroe.
Bernard Dunne, who has been
calling Munroe out, was publicly
offered a shot by promoter Frank
Maloney, but nothing came of it, so
Martirosyan stepped in.

BRISTOL'S National Smelting Club
promoted at Avonmouth Rugby Club
on June 12, including a team match
against Brighton City ABC.
This was tagged the "Southern
showdown" and it saw the Sussex
visitors win 4-2.
Brighton coach Brian Harvey said,
"The pick of the Sussex performances
were Richard Kaplan's first-round
stoppage victory and the impressive
debut of Crawley's Leon Bolt.
"Dave Murphy and Terry Richards
of Southmead for me put on the bout
of the evening.
