SINAN SAMIL SAM has
controversially been named as the
new European heavyweight champion.
Sam drew with Italian PAOLO
VIDOZ in Ankara two weeks ago, or
so we thought. It has since been
revealed that one of the two judges
who scored the contest 114-114
(One judge scored 115-113 for
Sam) originally scored the last
round 10-9 to the Turk but then
crossed it out and changed the
score to 10-10.
This meant the judge's overall
score went from a one-point Sam
win (114-113), which would have
given him a majority decision
victory, to a draw.
The judge has not been named,
but has apparently admitted to his
'mistake' in changing the score and
the decision has been changed to a
majority win for Sam.
The EBU approved this and
announced Sam as the new champ.
It is not known if Vidoz's camp will
protest.
JEFF FENCH'S one-off comeback
fight has former sports stars
realising they, too, could make
money by fighting him.
Fenech scored a 10-round points
win over arch-rival AZUMAH
NELSON in Melbourne last month,
sparking former IBF super-featherweight
and IBO light-middleweight
champion LESTER ELLIS, as well as
former Sydney Swans Australian
Rules footballer Warwick Capper,
to fire out challenges to him.
"I saw Jeff fight Azumah and it
reignited my will to fight. I want to
fight Jeff," Ellis said. "I want to
find out who is Australia's best
boxer."
Ellis, who has been troubled by
alcoholism and depression, is
unlikely to be given a licence to
fight. He would need to lose at
least 10 kilograms.
Ellis, 43, has fought only once
since 1996, losing in three rounds
to Anthony Mundine in an illadvised
comeback.
Capper, probably talking tonguein-
cheek, said Fenech was lucky to
win his rematch against Nelson and
would struggle against his talent.
"If Jeff can do it, I definitely
can," Capper, 45, said.
WALCOT ABC held a well-attended
end of season presentation evening
at the County Ground Hotel,
Swindon.
Danny Bharj won the Best
Senior Boxer award after a season
that saw him beat two top prospects
in Richard Ghent of Priory Park and
Slough's Ian Bailey.
He lost a close and controversial
majority to Lydney's Chris Higgs
(now pro) in the ABA
Championships.
Bharj was ranked
No. 10 at lightweight
in this paper's recent
Four Nations
Rankings.
Double Junior
ABA 75 kgs
champion Jorgen Cetaj took the
Best Intermediate Boxer trophy
after another impressive season.
The 17-year-old won all five of
his contests to remain unbeaten for
the second consecutive season.
