RICKY HATTON may be sticking with
trainer Billy Graham, but Birmingham
middleweight Matthew Macklin has
split from "The Preacher".
Macklin says Graham's bad hands,
often too sore to do much padwork,
was just one of many factors.
"It used to be a very busy gym,"
said Matthew. "There were Paul Smith,
Patrick Maxwell and now it's just Ricky
and Matthew [Hatton], who are both a
bit light for me to spar.
"Also, they only fight maybe twice a
year and 1 want to be fighting six times
this year."
In a surprising move, Macklin is
planning to relocate to America after
his next fight, and will be trained by
Floyd Mayweather Snr. "My friend Lee
Beards, who is helping me out for my
next fight, sent him some DVDs of my
last two fights. Lee's stepson Adrian,
who's 16, already trains with Floyd
over there.
"In the US, you don't have one
trainer's gym; you have five or six
trainers all using a gym and they all have
plenty of fighters, so you can always get
a good spar on. I honestly believe I can
beat any middleweight in Europe. I've
loved being a part of the Hatton camp
and have learned a lot, but now I want to
be my own Ricky Hatton."
Macklin fights French journeyman
Christophe Karagoz on the Andy Lee
Limerick bill on February 2.

CRAIG DOCHERTY'S boxing licence
was suspended by the Boxing
Board not because of his dispute
with promoter Tommy Gilmour but
because he didn't appear before
the Area council to explain himself.
A fortnight ago we said the
fighter's licence had been stripped
over his disagreement with Gilmour.
But according to the promoter,
the Glasgow lightweight paid
Gilmour 25 per cent of a purse he
had owed him and Gilmour then
donated it to the Board's Boxers'
Benevolent Fund.
"What I believe he [Docherty]
has been suspended for is because
he didn't turn up in front of the
Area council when they wanted him
to show up," said Gilmour. "The
reason he has been suspended has
nothing to do with me."

THE all-Florida light-heavyweight
clash between ANTONIO TARVER and
JEFF LACY will not happen in April or
May, after Lacy pulled the plug.
They were due to meet in Tampa
on April 12 as part of a doubleheader
with WBC light-heavyweight
CHAD DAWSON defending against
GLEN JOHNSON. But Lacy, who was
not pleased with his comeback performance
against Peter Manfredo,
says he wants to shed more ring
rust before taking on Tarver. "It's
personal between us," he said.
YUSAF MACK has volunteered to
deputise against Tarver.

Egan cruised to his eighth consecutive
national title (record sixth at lightheavy)
with a 19-4 win over Louth's
Ciaran Curtis in the Irish Senior finals
at the National Stadium.
A capacity 2,300 crowd saw Egan
(26) punish Curtis with rapid right jabs
and hooks from both gloves. He set the
pattern by winning the opening session
5-0 and forced a count in the second
with a looping left hook to the head.
Ken ended the round 11-1 ahead.

WALCOT ABC's second show
of the season was held at the
Premier Club, Swindon, on
December 7. A packed crowd
saw 15 bouts with 12 contested
by the home club.
The Swindon outfit enjoyed
eight victories with the most
impressive DANIEL BHARJ'S
third-round stoppage of RICHARD
GHENT (Priory Parl(|
