THE Everton Park Sl(y bill, set for
May 9, has been cancelled after
British light-welterweight champion
DAVID BARNES pulled out of a
defence against former title-holder
BARRY IHORRISON.
Barnes had a wisdom tooth
extracted and several other teeth
may also have to be removed.
Barnes is expected back in the
gym next week, and the fight should
be rescheduled for June or July.
Replacing the bill for Sky will be a
show at the Eston Sports Academy
in IWiddlesbrough, topped by PAUL
TRUSCOTT vying with Ghanaian
OSAMANU AKABA, probably for the
vacant Commonwealth feather title.
Okaba was No. 1 contender
to JACKSON ASIKU, who has just
vacated in the hopes of fighting
WBA champ CHRIS JOHN. They
were set to clash in Perth before
headliner Danny Green retired,
thus scrapping the bill. The
Commonwealth Council were
expected to approve the vacant
title scrap as we went to press.

FORMER Brilish heavyweight
champion SCOTT GAIVIMER appears
to be on the way back.
Gammer retired in September
after losing a 10-round points
verdict to John iVIcDermott in an
eliminator for his old title. He had
lost the belt to Danny Williams
just six months before that, when
Danny became the first to beat
Scott inside the distance.
Now a vacant EU title challenge
has been verbally agreed with
Sauerland Event for Gammer to
face Italian FRANCESCO PIANETTA
in Germany on July 19. Alexander
Povetkin will fight on the same show.
Gammer's manager Paul Boyce
says the EBU have yet to confirm
to him that they are sanctioning
the match.
"I think once Scott had a rest,
he wanted to give it another go,"
said Boyce.
"I don't think he's come
anywhere near reaching his
potential."

IN an interview with Sky Sports,
Naseem Hamed admitted he misses
boxing, that Floyd Mayweather could
go down as the best fighter that ever
lived and he's not ruled out fighting
again.
Of course, we've been hearing for
years that Hamed is going to return to
action - but Naz said if he were to box
again it would be at super-feather or
lightweight.
The pounds he has accumulated
since his last fight, a poor points win
over Spaniard Miguel Calvo nearly six
years ago, don't bother him.
Naz said: "The weight's an issue to
everyone else. I'm big because I want
to be big."
The 34-year-old, who lost just one of
37 fights - on points in Las Vegas to
Marco Antonio Barrera - said he
sympathised with Ricky Hatton
when watching the Mancunian lose
to Mayweather last December.
"My heart went out to Hatton,"
he said. "He took all that stick from
Mayweather."
In a rather ironic statement, Hamed
added: "That [the disrespectful
statements] really put me off
Mayweather.
"I used to do it tongue-in-cheek and
felt embarrassed doing so, but
Mayweather seems to do it with
genuine bad feeling."
Nonetheless, Naz is predicting that
Hatton bounces back successfully later
this month.

MIKE BROMBY, head coach at Hull
club St Pauls, was a happy man at the
end of the Sheffield weekend.
"I thought Luke Campbell did
really well," said Mike. "He beat not
just Michael Maguire but also a former
ABA champion in Paul Edwards.
"Luke's a had a great season - he
also beat France's Jerome Thomas,
who's qualified for his third Olympics
[at flyweightp'
Going to Beijing at Campbell's
weight (bantam) will be Joe Murray.
"It's a shame Murray got there first,
but that's boxing," said Bromby. "The
2012 London Olympics are the goal."
Mike was also pleased with his
middleweight Luke Allon, whose
speed of punching saw him 13-7 over
Leigh Morris (Benny's) in the quarters.
Morris even needed a count from a
good burst in round one.
In the semis Allon went down 24-9
to southpaw Karl Kirkham, but
Bromby wasn't disheartened.
"That's only Luke's second four-twos
in his life," he pointed out. "This is his
first season back after a five-year break.
"Luke stopped at 16 and is now 21.
He turns 22 in May. I thought he did
well, especially as I think Kirkham
will give George Groves problems in
the final."
