GARY LOCKETT, Cwmbran's WBU
champion, has verbally agreed to face
world middleweight No. 1 Kelly Pavlik
on June 7 at Madison Square Garden.
Lockett's promoter Frank Warren
said the fight was a "done deal" this
week, although contracts have yet to
be signed.
Lockett beat off stiff competition for
the MSG date from both Giovanni
Lorenzo and Marco Antonio Rubio.
The Welshman has never fought
anywhere near Pavlik's level (his best
victim is probably Kevin Kelly, then
a world class name at light-middle in
2002) but rejects claims the fight
is a mismatch.
BOXING'S starting to take off in
Malta. There have now been two
professional shows since a licensed
body was created to govern the
sport.
Until then most of the boxing

unlicensed and medical supervision

In May the Maltese board should
become affiliated to the EBU. The
last show attracted a crowd of
3,500.
John Essex, formerly Londonbased,
now trains boxers on the
island. Former pros Scott Dixon
and Ryan Kerr are helping him.
Kerr still hopes to fight again.
And Essex said he has a useful
heavyweight - 6ft 3in, 17 l/2st
BILLY CORITO, who is 2 -0 12).
Corito is coming to England to
spar Michael Sprott soon. Essex
has had him in the gym six months
and believes he can go places.
Mum gets a licence
A 45-year-old mother of two -
daughters aged 2 1 and 14 - has
been issued a licence to box in
Japan.
KAZUMI IZAKI first boxed in
2001. Although the rule in Japan
prohibits licence applicants from
being over 32, an exception was
made for Izaki because she
previously held a Japanese title,

the Japanese Boxing Commission.
